Corvette Z06 sweeps Spike TV’s AutoRox

Spike TV honored and celebrated America’s passion for the automobile last night from the Fremont Experience in downtown Las Vegas with a special celebration featuring awards for the best cars in 2006, live performances from some of music’s biggest names, and a special moment honoring one of the industry’s true legends. Hosted by Ice Cube, the night culminated with the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 driving off with the night’s biggest honor of “Car of the Year.” The Corvette also cruised away with “Best Sports Car” and “Deal of the Year.” Ice Cube did double-duty as he not only hosted, but for the first time ever, performed “Chrome and Paint” and “Why We Thugs” live. Academy Awards winners Three 6 Mafia also performed “It’s Hard Out Here For A Pimp.” Former Chrysler Chairman and CEO Lee Iacocca received the “Icon Award” his contribution to the automotive arena.

Kiefer Sutherland of Fox’s mega-hit series, 24, presented the award to Iacocca.

The winners for Spike TV’s AutoRox include the following:

  • Car of the year: Chevrolet Corvette Z06
  • Best Truck: Honda Ridgeline
  • Best Luxury Car: Audi A8
  • Best SUV: Land Rover Range Rover Sport
  • Hottest Exotic: Bugatti Veyron
  • Best Sports Car: Chevrolet Corvette Z06
  • Best Tuner: Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX
  • Deal of the Year: Chevrolet Corvette Z06
  • Best Concept Car: Chevrolet Camaro
  • Best Muscle Car: Dodge Charger SRT8

No surprise that the zed-six took home those acolaides. Wrap a light chassis around a big engine and tight suspension and see what happens.

Crappy interior for the money, though. My $27k VW mkV GTi has a much nicer interior. I don’t really agree with these guys about a number of the awards.

Car of the year – this should go to the mkV GTi, regardless of my bias, because of the sheer completeness of the package and the application of the DSG tranny. Plus it’s way too much fun to drive.

Best SUV – As much as I hate to say it, this should go to the XC90 V8. The Range Rover is just too overweight.

Hottest Exotic – In the sense that it’s fast, yes, the Veyron is hot. But it’s so ugly! My vote goes to the Maserati MC12.

Best Sports Car should be the Porsche Cayman S

Best Concept Car – while I like the Camaro concept, I really like the Maybach Excelero – that car is so freaking cool, even though it’s ridiculously heavy.

Granted, captain america, but I have sat in one and YOU haven’t driven the GTi. Best transmission in any care ever, bar none, plus it has a peppy engine, awesome seats, and a really nice suspension setup. According to R&T, it has a maximum lateral acceleration of .88G and it takes the slalom at 67.2mph. The Z06 has a maximum lateral acceleration of .99G and takes the slalom at 69.6mph, also according to R&T. Also, dismissing an entire car company out of hand for awards is prejudist, obviously.

moody – are you joking? you’re comparing a GTI to a Z06. Just think about it for a second – this is an honor for the best car, not the best car under $30K. The Z06 is a vastly superior car in every aspect except for rear seat room. It more than doubles the GTI’s HP and torque. …and just because you sat in a Z06 doesn’t mean you’ve driven one.

there is really no comparison between the gti and zo6… theyre both meant for speed, but not the same kind of speeds…
looking at the rest of the results… ridgeline as truck of the year? no, no, NO!
and i say challenger was a better concept than camaro… but thats just a mopar bias…

Why does everyone assume that a car that has a high HP and TORQUE makes it a better car? A car can be superior to another in so many different ways than just those two things. It all depends on what that cars manufacturer designed it to do.
The dodge viper can beat the ZO6 but I wouldn’t think of it to be more superior than the ZO6
Moody mentioned “completeness of the package and that is really what he thinks makes the GTI better than the ZO6… even though the ZO6 shouldn’t even be in the same sentence when you are comparing cars in the GTI’s class.

Besides, as a package goes, you’re missing the Focus ST over in the US, which imho just beats the Golf GTi MkV (although a very fine car also) due to being quicker, having brilliant handling and torque, a much nicer interior than the Mk1 Focus and a beautiful 2.5 litre 5 cyl straight from Volvo. The deal clincher is the value – about £500-2000 (UKP) cheaper than the GTi.

I agree with you on the XC90 – a very nice and underrated SUV. Won’t beat the Range as a full on offroader but imho is nicer than the X5 which its pitted against.

Quote from Zerome “The dodge viper can beat the ZO6 ”
Catch up on your reading Zerome before you make a comment like that. Z06 0-60 3.5 Viper 3.9 Corvette 11.5 @ 127.1 and viper 12.1 @ 119.3. Top Speed Vette 198, Viper 190. Not to mention the ZO6 starts 20K less than the Viper. Check it out for yourself on MT, Road and Track, Automobile any magazine and the Vette woops assphalt all over the Viper!

Yeah, i don’t understand Ford’s strategy with not bringing over its superior euro-spec cars to the states. How is a poorer quality car better for the US market? The only thing I can think of is that the euro-spec focus is made in Europe, so it would translate to being much more expensive to sell here. Is that the case?

Now, as far as the “Car of the Year” goes: if we’re just talking about raw horsepower denoting what car will be the car of the year, then the award should go to the Veyron; nothing else makes sense. My understanding is that the award should go to the best all-around car released in that year, which, IMHO, is the VW GTi (at least in the US market).

To Sean…
Believe me… I love the ZO6, it was just an analogy.

I wasn’t saying it without knowing the numbers. My point was really on the statement above that saying that those two things HP and TORQUE don’t only define a car. Look at cars like the M3… the corvettes from the past and present have always been faster than it but many people will say they like the fun fact of the M3. Cost aside… I am a fan of cars purly on their fun factor. A lotus is fun to drive.

Most american cars can be and are very very very fast… you can pull all the numbers out of the hat but what happens when you get to a curve or corner, why should the fun stop there? Why should i not be confident there. I’m not mentioning any cars in perticular, we all know which ones they are.
So yes, i know the numbers but those are not all that define a car.

Give your head a shake man
GTi as car of the year?
Totally laughable
Not even in the same Universe as the Z06 and barely beats out a Cobalt or a Neon

The Z06 is an awesome car but have we forgot about the new Shelby coming out people once that arrives then its a whole new game. From what i heard the shelby will be around 40 grand msrp and have around 475 to 485 hp and then it will have basically the same engine the Ford GT has except detuned so with just a pully swap and few other things it will get in the 600hp range easy and into the 9 second zone in the quarter mile easy as well the Z06 just doesnt know what is coming i hope you corvette fans have enjoyed it cause Ford is back baby.
