Could-a, would-a, should-a: What if the 3-Series Coupe looked like this?

07/27/2006, 12:07 PM

By admin

Design sketches of new cars are always more exotic than than the actual production cars that follow. But an official sketch of the recently-introduced 2007 BMW 3-Series Coupe caught our attention. Ignoring the exaggerated proportions and massive wheels, there’s something else different about this car. We’re particularly fond of the 6-Series-like roofline shown in the sketches. BMW is believed to have flip-flopped between calling the car 3-Series or 4-Series, and this image looks like it was penned with the latter scenario in mind. Would a 4-Series with a truer coupé roof have been a better choice? Have a look after the jump and make your own decision…

one thing i dont like about this is that they never make the production car look the way it’s sketched out.
the production cars alway end up looking crippled compared to the drawings

That roofline looks much better. I was hoping for a 4er that looked similar to the 6.

If we ignore the exaggerated proportions, this looks pretty much like the pre-productions photos. I agree the roofline is lower and much cooler looking, but the rest of it is very close to what’s been produced in reality, esp. the front. I only wish they would have kept headlights from the sedan.

Dan and snoboardguy21: It’s more about the shape off the roof, no? If you put a 6 roof on a 3 it would still be realistic and road legal. i think that is the point here.

Can’t say I like the front or sides, even taking into account the superdeformed nature of sketches, but that rearend is heavenly just the way it is. I would no longer be on the fence about buying a 3-series if that was how it really looked.

the bangled influence is just as strong, you have just begun to get used to it more. I for one loved the way bangle has taken design, its different, and so many companys have copied design cues. The cars that bangle designs will become some of bmw’s most recognizable in the future. the M series are instant classics.

Yawn…

This look was ‘on the walls’ at CCS and Art Centre 7 years ago. Strong “power” arc along flanks below beltline is stronger than Bangle’s droopy flames. Otherwise, could be a Kia.

Scotty (#15), Let me but it this way. This design is considerably LESS fragmented than the earlier designs.

i like it a lot better than the actual production 3 series cpupe. i think the new 3 series coupe looks very very ugly. if the M3 looks anything like it i will be one very sad man

#17 agreed, it is toned down from the first bangled 7, the 5, z4 and 6. #18 The M3 will be a different animal altogether. No need to worry. and to you #19 the 3 series for the money is one of the most valuable cars on the market. Few cars perform, handle, look, and are as advanced and forward thinking as a 3 series. I have an 01 330Ci and it has little things about it that cars NOW don’t even have.

What they should do is build a 1-series coupe utilizing a similar design, but forgoing the almost unusable rear seats and instead having a larger trunk / storage area, and still having a small, good looking and (relatively) affordable BMW coupe. For those who want more room and a bigger car, they can always move up market and get a 325 / 330 / 335i Coupe.

I was waiting for the new 335. But I got tired of waiting and got a used Audi S4 with twin turbos and a stick (Audi Certified too). A chip upgrade, aftermarket downpipes and a 3″ exhaust means I will have around 370hp in no time. I used to have one with only the chip; this time Stage2+ means the Audi sleeper will chew up any stock M3 (much less 330’s, G35s, ISwhateva’s)…

Which is wonderful if you are in the minority of wealthy Americans who can actually afford one. I’m glad rich folks are getting a great value, when they axed the 318i, and never brough over the E46 equivelant they showed their true colors as a company that caters to the minority of wealthy Americans with more common sense then brains.

#30 –anon– They are not prohibitively expensive. The 3 series is the benchmark for the sport sedan and has been for a long time.

A lot of folks who have money also have brains. They also work. Hard.

BMW decided after the 318ti debacle that the company would only import its 6 cyclinder motors and up. They are a premium brand in the US market and wanted to stay that way. 15 years after that decision, we all can say they succeded whether you like them or not. (Europe gets the whole range and gobbles them all up)

If you want a bargain BMW then go down to your local MINI dealer. That is what they are meant for.

Oh, look how late it is…. time to ge to work.
