I doupt Chrysler will only rebadge Fiat’s cars. I think they’ll use their platforms but those new vehicles won’t look like Fiat’s.
Jake66, good point about Europe’s pricing but Punto is not a competitor for Golf, Bravo is.

The Fiat 500, is a nicely styled car, but it’s in a class below the Ford Fiesta. The new Ford Ka is the smallest Ford in Europe, and it is based on the 500. The 500 is based on the Panda-platform. The 500 is more an image-car. The Panda is way more utilitarian, and also quite small. The Ford Ka drives and steers way better than the 500 or Panda.
The Fiesta competes with the Fiat Grande Punto. The Alfa Mito is based on the Punto platform (just like the Opel Corsa). Mito is a Mini-rival.
The Fiat Bravo (on the C-platform) is in the Focus class, just like the Dodge Caliber and VW Golf. The Bravo platform is getting on a bit (it’s based on the Fiat Stilo, a flop that came before the Bravo). That’s why Fiat needs Opel: it wants the Astra-platform.
Fiat’s largest car is the Croma, which sits on the GM epslion (1) platform, but that’s getting quite old.

The cross-hair grill thing is getting old too. It is possible to style in a way that is appropriate to both the brand and the vehicle. If I’m buying something the size of a Caliber do I really need the front end off a Ram?

Happy to hear about the Fiat’s coming over. I like seeing that Alfa will be here, that’s awesome news. Hopefully prices will be in line with our pricing here, as in Europe they are rediculously expensive. Punto is probably Fiat’s best model too, really a VW Golf rival. The Panda, though, they can keep that over on their side of the pond.

If everything stays how it is now, think about this Motortrend/Car and Driver comparo –

Mk VI Golf vs 2011 Ford Focus Hatch vs. Buick Astra vs. Chrysler Punto…. I’m in my personal hatchback heaven…. That’s less expected than the Cardinals in the Super Bowl…

OK I love 500 after driving it. But mixing JD Power review from UK and Mexican production facilities, those thingies may never get to the US border: they will not be able to drive them onto the truck (perhaps light cars can be pushed pr carried on).
