Six-wheeled Covini C6W supercar headed for limited production

12/09/2008, 2:14 PM

By Drew Johnson

The Covini C6W, which stands for Convini 6 Wheel, has been in the making since 1974, but it looks as though the odd design will finally get its day in the sun as it is reportedly headed for production. The C6W made its first appearance as a concept at the 2004 Geneva Motor Show.

The C6W is the brainchild of Ferruccio Covini, founder of the Italian firm Covini Engineering. Although Covini dreamt up the C6W more than three decades ago, the six-wheeled creation simply wasn’t technologically viable until the 1980s with the invention of hydro-pneumatic suspensions.

Since then, Covini Engineering has been quietly working on the C6W, equipping the supercar with ABS, airbags and other active and passive safety features. Covini’s work culminated in the unveiling of the C6W at the 2004 Geneva Motor Show.

But after the 2004-2005 show season, the C6W disappeared once again, with Covini’s engineering team going back to work on the Tyrell Formula 1-esque creation.

However, after 34-years and numerous prototypes, the C6W is finally ready for prime time. According to Italiaspeed, Covini will put the C6W into limited production towards the end of 2009, with an annual production of six units. The production C6W will feature a convertible top and a 440 horsepower 4.2L V8 sourced from Audi. No word on any performance numbers, but after 34-years of development, the C6W better have a stat sheet to match its radical design.

Historically successful manufacturers like Ferrari can’t even sell cars right now so what makes these dummies think they’ll be able to sell this stupid gimmick car?

Added weight AND ugly looks?!? Sign me up!

Seriously though, the Tyrell F1 car in the ’70’s had the 4 small wheels mainly because the smaller wheels= less air resistance on an open wheel car as opposed to two big tires. Not sure what the benefit would be here, as the tires are full size and enclosed by bodywork.. I’m also pretty sure they won’t even build one that get’s sold.

Ferruccio Covini described the advantages of having four front wheels in such a car as:

* less risk of front tires deflating
* less risk of aquaplaning
* better braking
* better grip
* better comfort
* better absorption of frontal impact

I remember a car back in the 70s that used this exact same concept. It was called the Panther 6. It had 6 wheels with the 4 front wheels used for turning. The wheels were smaller , but did allow for two more wheels with brakes. The car used a bored and stroked Cadillac V8 with about 450HP if I remember correctly. Only a few got made and I think they ended up going to some shiek somewhere.

It was FUGLY to but it made an impression on this 7 year old.

Assuming that its 4wheel drive (not awd) those extra two wheels up front should cure any understeer issues. But I wonder if they loose some off the line traction since there are now 6wheels to distribute the weight.

Why replace for tires when you can replace six. And I can just see the dude trying to give this thing an alignment scratching his head. This Ferrucio character has got to be smoking some good sh*t to keep this stupid idea in his head for 34 years. It usually looks stupid by the next morning.

So what happens when you go through tollways when cars are supposed to have just 2 axles? you have to pay for 3 axles now? First a “Smart” car that requires premium fuel to achieve a meager 36MPG, when a Toyota Corolla achieves 41 without looking like a total jackass environmentalist, and now this? what next? An automatic bicycle that’s not a motorcycle?

Can it be that this company also makes rims and tires? Man…. That thing is the most confusing thing to look at… Just got in to work right now and I thought that my eyes where playing me a trick… I am impressed that it took them 34 years to make a car as ugly as this.
As for the point of having a lesser chance of deflating on the front tires – Man what a joke. Instead of the regular two tires You now have four tires that can deflate… This is just dumb!

Let’s see.. 6 will be made the first year.. as if to remind us how many wheels it has, as if we can’t count! 6 jet-setters will buy them just to have something no one else has. What a dumb idea this is. Rear wheel drive with 4 front wheels.. brilliant!! If it had front wheel drive you could put a plow on it at least! I can see an NBA player buying one, or the dumbest actors, but I’m hard-pressed to think of anyone else. I like cars and motorcycles, but it annoys me that the automotive press spends so much time reporting on goofy and/or ultra exotic vehicles like this rather than what we actually might drive. It’s like they rub this stuff in our faces as if to say “it’s a half million bucks and you can’t afford it, ha, ha!” I predict the production run will stop at 6. One of the dumbest automotive concepts I’ve ever seen.
