The Covini C6W, which stands for Convini 6 Wheel, has been in the making since 1974, but it looks as though the odd design will finally get its day in the sun as it is reportedly headed for production. The C6W made its first appearance as a concept at the 2004 Geneva Motor Show.
The C6W is the brainchild of Ferruccio Covini, founder of the Italian firm Covini Engineering. Although Covini dreamt up the C6W more than three decades ago, the six-wheeled creation simply wasn’t technologically viable until the 1980s with the invention of hydro-pneumatic suspensions.
Since then, Covini Engineering has been quietly working on the C6W, equipping the supercar with ABS, airbags and other active and passive safety features. Covini’s work culminated in the unveiling of the C6W at the 2004 Geneva Motor Show.
But after the 2004-2005 show season, the C6W disappeared once again, with Covini’s engineering team going back to work on the Tyrell Formula 1-esque creation.
However, after 34-years and numerous prototypes, the C6W is finally ready for prime time. According to Italiaspeed, Covini will put the C6W into limited production towards the end of 2009, with an annual production of six units. The production C6W will feature a convertible top and a 440 horsepower 4.2L V8 sourced from Audi . No word on any performance numbers, but after 34-years of development, the C6W better have a stat sheet to match its radical design.
