Dacia Duster: First-ever concept for Romanian automaker

03/03/2009, 10:10 AM

By Andrew Ganz

Dacia, the low-cost Romanian brand owned by French automaker Renault, isn’t exactly known for its concept cars, but that’s all changed now thanks to the Duster concept car, a crossover that the automaker says “reinvents” the genre.

The Duster’s futuristic style might preview some design themes that will eventually make their way onto the automaker’s rather humble offerings. Dacia has seen great success marketing to emerging markets like Eastern Europe and Russia.

The concept car stores a bicycle up front, an obvious nod to the youthful buyers with which the brand seeks to be associated. A chocolate brown and sky blue motif is evident throughout.

Underhood, the Duster concept features a 1.5-liter four-cylinder diesel that puts out 105-horsepower and 177 lb-ft. of torque.

Dacia says that its owner, Renault, was integral in helping the small brand produce its first-ever concept car.

Wow! This is just the car I need for my… …bicycle!

First ever concept? Does that mean that Dacia has never had their own ideas before?

Actually, if this IS their first venture into concepts, it’s not bad. Aside from the strange, gaping rear panel, I like this.

its the first time ever they built a concept car. they had some ideas, but mainly, dacias are based off renault models, with a redesigned sheet metal, and less comfort. they built cars for the purpose, not for style or looks (which you can both see when u have a look at their current lineup, and feel as well in ur purse when u get one… hardly any other automaked has prices that low in europe currently…)

its not gonna be top of the list concerning the quality, but as those guys pretty much keep out any high-tech gagdets (that would drive up the price), i guess theyre not too bad after all… most of todays quality probs are tech-based, dont forget that ;)

@Get Real

Actually the Dacia current models are very reliable even on the worst roads because they were designed for that. They are roomy, cheap to run and don’t break down.
