Mercedes-Benz is expected to sell more than 1.25 million vehicles this year – setting a company record – but the German automaker is calling for an even more lucrative 2012.

According to information gathered by Automotive News Europe, Daimler’s Mercedes-Benz brand plans to sell 1,417,400 vehicles in 2012. That figure excludes commercial vehicles like the Sprinter and sales of Daimler’s Smart and Maybach divisions.

In all, Daimler expects to build 1.52 million units next year, with that tally increasing to 1.67 million in 2013.

“Mercedes-Benz is going on the attack,” Wolfgang Bernhard, Daimler board member for manufacturing and procurement, said earlier this year. “We are securing our path to the top by extensively investing in the expansion of our high-performance production network.”

Although still unpopular in the United States, Daimler expects to sell 99,212 units of its Smart ForTwo worldwide next year. The company’s Maybach super luxury brand will be phased out by the end of 2012.
