A consortium led by company David James is in talks with the Daimler Chrysler about buying the rights to sporty versions of the Smart car — the Smart Roadster and Roadster Coupe. Project Kimber, which is chaired by James, earlier this year made an unsuccessful bid for MG Rover, the defunct Birmingham-based car group. Project Kimber could restart production in 2007 if Chrysler approves the sake early next year. Last week, we reported that DaimlerChrysler was considering selling the entire Smart unit, either wholly or in parts. If the Project Kimber rumor is correct, it would appear the the German automaker is pursuing the latter strategy. However, CEO Dieter Zetsche has said he favours selling Smart as a complete entity.
