Daniel Craig can drive stick, insiders say

For the last few months, a story has been going around that the new James Bond actor, Daniel Craig, couldn’t drive the manual transmission of 007’s Aston Martin DBS. The rumor added fuel to the anti-Craig fire for both car enthusiasts and Bond fanatics. But it turns out those stories aren’t quite true. According to “those in the know,” Daniel Craig does, indeed, drive stick and he says you pretty much have to in England. “I’m glad that’s cleared up,” writes USA Today columnist Craig Wilson. “There are too many things wrong in this world today to add James Bond driving around in a car with an automatic transmission.” But Wilson is still irked by one thing. “I’m still mystified when I walk by a beautiful sports cars and see it’s an automatic. What’s the point, I wonder? Why would you spend all that money only to be on cruise control?” Agree with Wilson? Post your thoughts in the comment section…

Oh I agree why oh why would you get a sports car in an automatic. I mean a GT car like the XK8 I can understand having an optional automatic but even then a manual should be standard.

I have a plan to get rid of him once and for all. He has to drive a manual Yugo off the train tracks where a TGV is coming in his direction at top speed. I, of course, will not stick around to see if he gets away and assume my devious plot will go exactly as planned.

I have the speculation quite ridiculous. He is British if I am not mistaking, and there is 99.9% chance that he learnt how to do drive with a manual transmission.

A sport car with A/T is a total stupidity, not to mention a desecration of teh concept itself.

Daniel Craig drove my stick while we were at college. He sure knows how to control his gag reflex

Automatic? What’s that? Even my daily driver sedan is a manual. Automatic’s are worthless. There’s jest not enough control there. I can count at least a few times where having a manual transmission saved my car from being in an accident. I’ve owned one automatic and I will never own one again.

Someone ought to tell Wilson that not all two-door cars are sports cars. GTs, by which I mean long-wheelbase, high-dollar, independent rear, vestigial rear seat, high curb weight, large displacement v8 equipped luxo-boats are better attached to an automatic. A GTO, for example, doesn’t provide the same soaring-revs (with a need for shifting to stay “on it”) that an s2000 offers. I will bet you that this Wilson has mistaken a GTO or XK8 or even an acura CL for a sports car. Heaven forbid a hyundai tiburon.

How many undebateable “sports cars” of the absolutely-manual (as in… you ought to be ashamed…) ilk are even left anymore?

I think we’d all like to put the 911 on this list but that is a HUGE offender. aren’t tiptronic and 911 almost synonymous now? it will get worse now that the auto 997turbo does 0-60 in 3.4 while the stick is 3.7?

We can put this silly Bond rumor down to American ignorance. They assume that because 80% of them can’t drive stick, it’s the same everywhere in the world. Hey, in some countries you can’t even get your licence if you can’t shift for yourself.

has anoyoe of you guys ever heard of tip-tronic? please, don’t be so innocent. not every automatic driver is over 80, no, its the nice way to drive. especially if you have the choice between smoothly cruising through the city or driving more agressive with tiptronic. and you don’t even have to press a pedal…

manaul trans all the way. it’s more fun than an auto could ever hope to be. DSG is nice and works rather well, but it isn’t as fun to me. sequential gearboxes are nice on, like, a maxima, but on a serious high performance car it’s just wrong. so what if driving a stick in traffic is hard? god forbid we have to do something. and like pressing a pedal is so hard, if that’s your argument against a manual trans then that’s just sad.

I think it is mainly that Daniel Craig is a poor choice to portray James Bond and too many Bond loyalists think so too. He lacks the class of past actors like Brosnan and Connery. They just can’t seem to accept the truth that the film is already finished and there is nothing they can do about it but to rant about it.

How many of you have read stories in the newspaper about cars that were saved because the thief attempting to steal it couldn’t deal with that mysterious 3rd pedal on the far left (clutch for you young punks). When the first Ford Taurus SHO hit the market in the 80s one big complaint was no auto trans option. As far as the Bond, who cares? Most of you young only know about Connerys Bond is watching the reruns on Spike TV or Nick-at-Night. The discussion was about driving manual transmission cars, not your opinions about actors. And yes, more Brits than Americans have the ability to do that. Half of you bastards can’t parallel park either! So much for your masterfull control of a car!

ONE. you doubt Daniel Craigs ability to be the next Bond? Do your research and watch Layer Cake. Amazing movie and it will prove to you all ignorant people that he can play the part. SECOND. standard transmission is the only way a real man should drive a car. tip-tronic is for lazy pussies. there isn’t an incling of fun or skill to tip-tronic.
