Data: SUV safety improves

08/23/2006, 1:47 PM

By admin

It looks like an increased emphasis on SUV safety in recent years may be paying off. According to recently-released NHTSA data [see pdf], the overall occupant fatality rate for SUVs showed the greatest decline of all vehicle types this year — down 8.7% (page 61). SUVs also had the largest decline of all vehicle types in occupant fatality rate in rollover crashes — down 11% (page 91). The number of occupants killed and injured in two vehicle crashes involving a passenger car and an LTV (pickup, van, SUV) fell 4.9% for truck drivers, and 3.0% for car drivers (page 95). Among all passenger vehicles, SUVs had the largest increase in registrations — up 11% (page 56 of the report).

What is more interesting is that 55% of fatalaties involved people not restrained in the vehicle. That is what makes the most differance not what kind of vehicle you are in or even what speed you are driving.

It also makes sense that the fatality rate for SUVs is falling. Many of the old body on frame style SUVs are going away with more SUVs being cross overs or stand alone Unibody designs. Also even the body on frame style SUVs are getting a lot more active safety features like stablity control and roll mitigation.

Interesting… first there is mention of the fact that SUV sales were down this year, and then they try to dismiss that point by stating that SUV safety is up as a result of fewer SUV fatalities… did I read this correctly? Is this just bull**** made-up statistical crap?

I think all companies paid NHTSA to put in good word for their SUVs. Its the only way to attract customers to the dealerships to get more SUVs. Just great. More trucks on the road is what we need.

If SUV sales go down then what happens to SUV fatalities? It also goes down, of course because there will be less SUVS on the road.

GM safety scores will continue to be the worst of all, next to the Chinese of course. They would rather sell you one of their many SUV’s for you to get a safe car. Simple way of thinking from simple minds at GM

What I’d like NHTSA is to tell us what class of vehicle people are dying in besides SUVs. Since there are so many more cars on the road than SUVs and light trucks, the percentage of people dying in cars I’m sure is greater than the percentage of people dying in SUVs. I would be willing to wager that the highest number of deaths are in small cars, the foreign crap that our fellow Americans are in love with.

Also, alcohol has always been involved in at least 50% of highway deaths. Not fair to blame any vehicle when irresponsible drinkers drive. I don’t drink, so I can make a statement like that.

Why would I have to get an extended warranty? Why would I waste my money? If something does go wrong down the road I can fix most of the problems myself anyways. :P
