Dealers begin auctioning 2009 Camaros on eBay

08/11/2006, 12:48 AM

By admin

Some GM dealers have already begun auctioning the right to purchase the first 2009 Chevrolet Camaros on eBay. Currently, ‘Buy It Now’ prices sit between $20,000 and $25,000 — the amount the customer agrees to pay on top of the car’s MSRP. Back in May, some dealers began taking $1,000 deposits for the new Camaro. However, GM pressured the dealers to remove ads for down-payments, because production for the car had not yet been approved. However, following today’s official announcement that GM will build the Camaro, it seems the dealers are right back at it again.

The only reason the car is cool is that it gives good performance for the dollar.

Once it gets expensive, I’ll take the BMW, or the Porsche.

Stupid is as stupid does.

The same people who place a bet on this car are the same people who paid $400 for THE BOX of an Xbox 360. This does demonstrate two things however, a fool and his money are soon parted and the Camaro is going to be a big hit and is a milestone on the Generals hard slow road to recovery

Too bad that the market will be flooded by these after the first month…

So the people who pay 50grand for one will feel quite foolish after they see dealers trying to get rid of them in a month! LOL

It will be a cold day in Hell when I pay above sticker for a car! GM and Ford should stop these damn dealers from going above MSRP. They may as well not even use a MSRP and let them make their own price if they keep this **** up!

I’m sure there were some morons who paid over MSRP for the intial Soltices.

I don’t understand why people will pay so much for a car that is going to be easily available for MSRP just a couple of months after introduction. Weve seen this before people have paid an extra 5-10k to have cars such as PT crusiers, mustangs and soltices early. an extra 25,000 over MSRP would put the camaro into corvette territory…hell it would put a loaded model in to just 5k or so short of a Z06.

I am sure both the solstice and the corvette Z06 are going over MSRP. Just plain supply and demand people. these people do this on their own will. who care if and why they do it.

We should all bid $1,000,000 or more on them and jam the auctions, so they have to pull them. That would be funny! GM is trying to keep things realistic and price the Camaro where they can make money, and fans are willing to pay for it. These “stealerships” are disgusting.

It would be nice if people would buy cars at sticker, any car. If that was the norm you probably wouldn’t see the adm. After a dealership sells 90 percent of his new cars at invoice minus rebates because that what the customer demands, he needs to make his money somewhere.
And besides, its the customer who sets the price. Not the dealer. The dealer may put an additioanl 25000.00 on the car but no one is forcing the customer to buy it. Why not try to boycott, thats worked well before.

There was above sticker for the new C6 Vette, and A LOT over sticker for the Z06. But not to this extent. The only above sticker for the C6 was paying extra to get the first one on the lot of a particular dealership.

When there are terrible markups, and everyone who wanted one has one and the Camaros are sitting on the lots for a long time, and prices go way below what they paid for it I WILL LAUGH. The people who bought one will not be pleased.
I for one don’t like the Camaro concept.
By the time the Camaro comes out, the Challenger will have been out for quite some time and the Mustang will be redesigned.
The Camaro will be left in the dust by the redesigned Mustang, and this retro craze will slowly fade away and there won’t be as large of a demand for these pony cars. The Mustang started this pony car thing, and will end it.

Jay, please provide any information you have on the redesigned mustang.. I haven’t heard anything yet. Please tell me that you have more than a pro-ford anti-gm bias to back up your claims. Please, ANYTHING substantive at all.

yep. that’s what I thought.

The buy it now price is 20k, I’d bet the reserve is also 20k. So bidding 19,9 would make it look rediculous to bid, yet still cost the dealer the listing fees and the ‘bidder’ wouldn’t pay anything.
I personally wouldn’t try it, but it would be funny as hell if someone did bid just below the reserve price.
Any ebay employees out there? Kidding. Don’t send me hate mail.

Jay,
Please get the hell out of the GM portion of this site, since obviously you are on the Mustang bandwagon. I hate to break it to you, but Mustangs are pieces of **** man. My 02′ SS will stomp a mudhole in any of them on the road today, except for the new Cobra (LOL), which you don’t have, and if I had to go and buy a Supercharger to put on my car to compete like Mustang did with Camaro and Corvette’s, then I would really detroy all those little pony’s I see on a daily basis. Begone little man, cus Ford can’t hang. If you wanna talk sales also, then thats great, 80% of Mustangs out there are V-6’s, why would any Camaro or Vette owner be jealous of those crappers.

Yeah, a few shady dealers have been known to drive a new car a couple thousand clicks and call it used so they can jack up the price above MSRP. Lame!

proving a point to someone? Who?
In case you missed the memo, DCX is not competing with GM and ford. They are aiming for a *slightly* different segment and have put together a product plan to make the venture profitable.

you state that the camaro will be left in the dust by the redesigned mustang. I want to know what facts (not opinion), if any, you have to back up this statement. So far, I have not seen a single statement anywhere even hinting at any aspect of the ‘09 ’stang. no word on platform, powertrain, interior, exterior… nothing. If you have anything, please share with the class.

Personally, I wish GM would do away with all conventional dealerships as they exist now, and open their own outlets as a division of GM. Call them the “GM Store”. They would function identically to modern dealerships, but GM would have full control. I’ll guarantee you that GM won’t gouge you on their new Camaro as they’re trying to push volume out the door…
