DeLorean set to return in 2008

08/21/2007, 2:15 PM

By Drew Johnson

After leaving the market in the early 1980’s, the DeLorean brand is set to make a come-back in 2008. Stephen Wynne, a Texas entrepreneur who has owned the DeLorean Motor Co. name since 1995, has announced that he will begin production of the DeLorean next year at his 40,000 square-foot plant near Houston.

According to the Detroit Free Press, the company currently handles DeLorean routine maintenance, such as oil changes and tune-ups and ships between 20 and 50 parts orders a day. In addition, the company can take an existing DeLorean, strip it to the frame and rebuild it for a base price of $42,500. Wynne’s staff can rebuild one every few months. Wynne also owns the original inventory from when DeLorean went out of business.

The new DMCs, which will look like the original, will be hand made using a mix of 80% original parts and 20% new, although the company only has enough doors for about 500 cars. The new car will have several improvements over the original including an improved stainless-steel frame, a stronger but lighter fiberglass underbody and upgraded electronics. A more powerful engine will also be available. The production target is set at one or two cars a month.

The cost for a new DeLorean will be $57,500, or roughly the cost of the $25,000 original car in today’s dollars.

Haha, that’s awesome. It says a more powerful engine will be available..I wonder if it’s a new motor or just a retuned version of the PRV V6.

Does the convenience package include a Flux Capacitor?

oh cool. Maybe they will use some volvo engine, as they still have the same mounts as the old volvo and prv motors.

Every single car article will use the title “Back to the Future” when this thing comes out, or some variation of it.. “Back from the Past” maybe…

10 free kilos when you buy one.
yes, maximus, they’ll have a flux capacitor, and run on garbage. I suggest you go back to 1982 and tell John D. to leave that stuff alone!

I wonder if he’ll put up for new products. That would be grand. I also hope that some effort is put into making the car better. the tranny and engine both sucked, as I recall, but is was an otherwise awesome car.

Cool, if its really new. Don’t try to sell me the old version just cause it was cool back then, and still to some degree.

For now it seems it will be very much like the original, in some cases the same car but modestly updated. I’m not complaining. I just hope that they come up with an all new machine not too long after this comes about. I wouldn’t mind owning an “original” and the new car at the same time.

Anyone know if they will change the engine?

will flop. old “new” parts will fail. engine is only 1 aspect of what it takes to make it modern. this will be a colossal POS and disaster. should’ve been redesigned ground up with a retro look – would sell like crazy if it were any good.

I hope so. But the engine was not a boxer type like a Subaru (H4) or Porsche (H6). But I think they can get away with a solid GM Ecotec or Ford Duratec V6.

My only question is, why? It was mostly regarded as a POS back then; how are they possibly going to convince anybody that’s it’s not a POS now, when the rest of the auto industry has had 20 years to progress?

It’d be interesting to read Mr. Wynne’s business plan, and see where he thinks he’ll be in five years.

That’s neat, but where is this going to get the brand? I would seriously consider redesigning most of the car, but I suppose he doesn’t have the available capacity to do so.

Round out the car a little, make it a little more “legato”, and improve the drivetrain and mechanics, not to mention the doors.

1980s reliability issues aside, here is nothing altogether wrong with the car. I’d be PO’d if the sound system was not rounded up to 2008 standards. The doors only real problem will be weather sealing. but since most will not be kept out of doors and most will be hermetically sealed upon purchase anyway. I wouldn’t worry much. that and the materials should be far better than the actual originals, which would have made the car vastly more expensive.

I’m sure the improvements listed are just the tip of the iceberg. But I wouldn’t look for any real changes to the overall body design. Frankly I would want my DeLorean to look as much like the original as possible and screw aesthetically modernizing it.

When and if they get to developing and ALL NEW DeLorean, then I’ll be expecting more than just equipment updates. Like those picture I posted links to, I’ll be expecting a lot more.

If they could sell 500 of those 25 years ago, DLC would be in business today. It does have Volvo and Renault engine and gear box. The engine was combined development in 70’s. Both companies used it.

I would have rather seen them take the Boyd Coddington approach on this. Tweak the body, new chassis, suspension, brakes and drivetrain. It would have been a much better package.
