Embattled and bankrupt U.S. auto parts supplier Delphi yesterday told a federal bankruptcy court it can immediately cancel its labor agreements — an action that could lead to a devastating strike, reports the Chicago Tribune. Meanwhile, there are reports that Delphi has begun advertising for replacement workers who will work for $10 to $14 per hour. One such posting, at the Athens plant in Atlanta, is causing quite a stir, reports Automotive News. The UAW slammed the advertisements as “insulting.” Currently, the unionized workers make $28 an hour. Thomas Manganello, a Southfield, Michigan labor attorney, was quoted as saying, “either Delphi is worried that too many people will take a buyout, or it’s preparing for a strike.” Delphi has offered many UAW workers a buyout plan that would leave them with a lump-sum payment upon termination of their jobs.
