Few marques have quite the devoted following of Volkswagen. Although the brand was born out of one of the darkest periods in modern history, its vehicles nonetheless helped mobilize the entire world with their unintentionally cheeky style.

Their simplicity is perhaps their strongest point, and that’s what forms the basis for Depth of Speed’s latest episode: Simple Soul.

Depth of Speed, the brainchild of a filmmaking couple in Salt Lake City, is an extended-term project designed to document the way humans find themselves connected to a variety of vehicles. Recently, we featured all of their episodes so far; Simple Soul is the latest in the series.

Filmmaker Josh Clason and his wife spent some time with vintage VW enthusiast Craig Johnson. His cars, says Clason, are “just staggeringly beautiful.”

The footage ain’t bad, either.
