Details emerge on 2012 VW Passat [Illustrated]

06/11/2008, 4:16 PM

By Drew Johnson

The Volkswagen Passat will go through one more face lift in 2009 before an all-new model bows in 2012, and our sources have tipped us off about what to expect from the next-generation sedan when it debuts early next decade.

The 2012 will retain its transversely mounted engine, although it will ride on an all-new platform. Dubbed MQB, the architecture will prevent VW from putting obscure engines — such as the ill-fated W8 — in the Passat and should ensure that VW doesn’t move the Passat too far up-scale.

The new MQB will underpin several of VW’s mid-size vehicles, including the Passat sedan and estate, the next-generation Passat CC and a new sedan and SUV headed for the U.S.

The decision to use the MQB platform rather than the architecture that underpins the Audi A4/A5 rules out any longitudinally-mounted engines VW has in the wings. Therefore the German automaker will make use of several smaller gas and diesel engines, most of which will offer a hybrid powertrain. According to a UK media report, the Passat will use 1.4L and 1.6L gas engines that utilize the automaker’s ‘Twin Charger’ technology — which combines turbo and supercharging technologies. Diesel powerplant choices will include a 1.6L and a 2.0L

There is also the strong possibility that VW will offer the 2012 in VR6 and VR6 TDI guises. The gas VR6 would likely make about 300 horsepower and as much torque, but the real story would be the TDI versions. Sources say the 3.0L diesel V6 would produce 300 horsepower along with a stout 443 lb-ft or torque.

Both VR6 models would be available with VW’s eight-speed dry-clutch DSG and all-wheel drive.

Stylistically, the 2012 Passat should be more evolutionary rather than revolutionary. It will lose the majority of its chrome trim and will have the general look of an up-scale vehicle.

Although its dimension will stay relatively the same, look for the next-gen Passat to go on a hefty diet with a heavy emphasis on aerodynamics.

The 2012 Passat might be shedding some weight, but that doesn’t mean VW will skimp on the car’s technical features — many of which are futuristic and have never even seen automotive applications. Look for the ‘12 Passat to sport an air suspension, a low-friction 4Motion all-wheel drive system, airless tires, a wiperless window cleaning system by Bosch, optional rear-wheel steering, an around view camera, ESP with countersteer assistance, a cruise control system that will know the speed limit, paint that can change color based on the current sent through it, personalized window graphics with message function and LED-film taillights.

The next-generation VW Passat was originally scheduled for a 2013/2014 debut, but look for it to hit showrooms sometime in 2012.

WV reminds me of Paris Hilton: it does look good, but think what you can catch if you sample it?

I don’t know if it’s the year 2012 (sounds futureistic) but I expected more then just this.
This thing can really get lost in a crowd.

A diesel with 300hp & 443 lb-ft of torque. Wow, it won’t be lacking in performance that’s for sure. As usual with VW, everything sounds great on paper but in reality it will be another unreliable VW that spends more time in the service station then on the road & about 3 years into its life the car will start falling apart.

BlackX has a job in PloieÅŸti, Romania, sewing seat covers for this piece of crap. One day he dreams of getting promoted to cutting loose threads from seams, and if he licks the spätzle off his gay german boss’s bratwurst then he may one day advance to foamfillerphucktard.

Somebody should tell VW you don’t bring a can of Pledge to a bikini wax.

You could replace the VW badge with a blue oval, and it would look the same. And probably the same reliability, too.

That illustration better be of the 2009 facelift, and not of the 2012 all-new model. It already looks dated!

I don’t see what all the ****ing fuss is about over this car. Why doesn’t VW just not build it, but say they did? It’ll save millions.

If LLN was in touch with German car mags they would know that VW sadly terminated the development of the VR6 and the 5 cylinder diesel engines shortly before tzhey were finished thanks to this environmental trend everybody is blidly following.. sad.. the last-Gen. Passat offered 8 cylinders, the current one only has 6 and the next one might be limited to 4…

The 8 cylinder Passat was not exactly set any sales records, in fact, it was a dud.
