Details emerge on Ferrari’s upcoming Enzo replacement

06/23/2008, 12:33 PM

By Drew Johnson

Ferrari has been without a true supercar since the Enzo ended its limited production run just a few years ago, but the Italian automaker is hard at work developing its next-generation supercar for launch in 2010. While the new car will be the successor to the Enzo, look for Ferrari to closely follow the saying “less is more.”

A new Car and Driver report finds that the Enzo successor will be based on the Millechili concept – which was little more than a model created out of cardboard and plastic – but will not wear the Millechili nameplate in production form.

However, the Millechili’s light-weight concepts will make the translation from show car to production. Based on a slightly longer version of the F430’s aluminum space frame, the next-generation Enzo will tip the scales at a mere 2,200 pounds. Combine that svelte curb weight, Ferrari’s F1 knowhow and a new 600 horsepower V10 and the result is likely to be one of the world’s best performing road cars.

Production of the newest Ferrari supercar is expected to begin in 2010 with a total production run of about 300 units. Pricing is far from official but expected to start at about $500,000.

Ummm, this was in the May or June C&D, I believe (which would have been out in April or May). Not really “news.”

Where’s all the basher’s because of the car’s poor fuel economy? Isn’t soembody going to remind us that gas is $4 a gallon? Oh, it’s not American, how foolish of me! It’s ok because it’s a Ferrari and not a Challenger, Mustang or Camaro.

NSX will have a V10 too, I hope it will be competitive

Enzo planned to be 2200 lbs (1 metric ton). I haven’t seen anything claiming that Honda has the same plans for NSX. NSX aimed at Hollywood types, who don’t drive very well to begin with and need all electrical appliances they can put in a car. Different markets: Enzo for Paul Newman type; NSX for Billy Crystal.

and acura NSX vs Enzo 2? what???? not even close. Thats like saying the Dodge Viper will go head to head with this car because it has a V10.

NSX will be front-mid-engined, and will surely compete against Ferrari… sorta like F1!! does dodge compete in F1? no, so the viper dosen’t compare

WTF? Ferrari expects us to pay $500,000 for this thing and still be able to pay for gas? Where do they get off thinking that?

This car just isn’t meant for people who want to save money at the pump, is it?

Yes, that was sarcasm.

Um HemiRoadRunner…the reason that fuel economy is a non issue is because they are only making 300, not tens of thousands. Also, the fuel economy will be helped by its very meager weight. In a car of this class, fuel economy is a non-issue because they will not be driven daily and en masse, therefore your arguments is implausible…

Ya know, I was expecting Ferrari to go with a larger V12 like the one from the FXX only detuned to maybe around 700hp or so, but I do have to say that I’m quiet happy that they’ve decided to go the route of low weight. It makes so much more sense, I mean look at F1. It’s all about smaller, more high-revving engines and lightweight than just pure muscle.

Ah, Lambos, I do have to admit I’m a big Lambo fan. I know they’re not supercars like a Ferrari or a Koeniggsegg, but I don’t care, they look cool, and they’re great cars IMO. It’s all a matter of personal taste though.
