The Audi TT is due for a redesign in 2014, and we now have an idea of what to expect for the third-generation of Audi’s stylish two-door: a lighter, more focused driving machine.
Audi officials say that the next TT will be a “more driver oriented” coupe aimed directly at the likes of the Porsche Boxster, Autocar reports.
One of the factors that will contribute to the new TT’s more responsive handling is a slight weight reduction from the current base car’s mass of 3,150 pounds. The car will be built around a inner structure with a higher percentage of lightweight aluminum in the bulkheads and floorpan, and aluminum will also continue to make up a large portion of the bodyshell.
Underpinning the next TT will be Audi and Volkwagen’s new “MQB” transverse-engine architecture, which will make its debut at next month’s Geneva show under the sheetmetal of the new Audi A3 (the current TT and A3 models also ride on the same basic PQ35 platform).
Besides retaining the stylistic essence of the original, Bauhaus-inspired TT, sources at Audi told Autocar that the new coupe will be “more technical looking.” Also look for details like larger fender flares, stronger shoulder lines and the latest version of Audi’s large corporate grille.
Under the hood, the current crop of turbocharged four- and five-cylinder engines are expected to return with more power, while front- and all-wheel-drive will continue to be offered.
After the new TT launches in 2014, a drop-top variant should follow within a year.
