GM to produce a minicar? [update]

Despite denials from General Motors Vice Chairman Bob Lutz, it looks as though GM is considering brining one of the mini cars showed at last April’s New York Auto Show to the U.S. market. The three cars, the Beat, Trax and Groove, were engineered and designed for the Asian market by the auto maker’s GM-Daewoo unit.

According to BusinessWeek, GM Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner wouldn’t give a firm answer as to whether one of the vehicles would make it to the U.S. market, but he hinted that he’s keen on selling one here. “I just looked at them the other day,” Wagoner said, “and not just because I wanted to look at them.”

Earlier this month, GM Daewoo’s Michael Grimaldi told AutoWeek that GM is testing the North American market’s reaction to small city cars, a sector of the market that has been largely absent from North America. GM would likely only produce one of the three cars, badged as Chevrolet Beat, Trax and Groove. The vehicle would be based on GM Daewoo’s Matiz/Spark architecture.

After GM showed the three concepts in New York, the company set up a website where consumers could weigh in with a vote on the cars. The Beat received the most votes but GM insiders say the company feels the second place car, the Groove (pictured above), may be the best mini for the U.S. market.

Deanster, seems you’re fresh off another crack binge. How might one accurately test responses WITHOUT DESIGNING A PRODUCT FIRST?! MAYYYYBEEE the negative responses is the reason they are not feasible. Ponder that a moment.

Anyway, it’s too bad there supposedly was a lack of enthusiasm. These type of vehicles are a far better solution to gas mileage than battery powered cars. They cost less, are just as efficient, and use far less earth un-friendly materials. I’d consider this any day over a Prius.

Had you ever worked on a feasibility study, you might understand the concept. But that’s okay, I expect nothing more from a Domino’s delevery driver. Let me educate you. A feasibility study simply tries to understand if a project is feasible or not. The means by which the study determines this may include further development of design, market research, research into governing laws, and meeting with government officials with decision making power over the project. See, engineering plays but a partial role in a feasibility study. Keep up the good work Deenie-Weenie.

Just because you don’t see a market for them, doesn’t mean everyone else won’t either. I personally wouldn’t be caught dead in one of these… A) they look like toys. B) After having been a GM owner for years (now a Toyota and Chrysler owner), I know I’d be paying for scrappy quality. However, I live in the suburbs. Many people who live in big cities with hardly enough space to maneuver will buy these. These would look foolish and impractical where I live… just as my SUV would look foolish and impractical in a big city.

At any rate… I find it amusing that 1487_GM_SALES has nothing to say about these hideous little things.

I’m not surprised GM is considering bringing cars smaller than the Aveo to North America.. but judging by the Aveo itself, I doubt they would pay any attention to them once they’re introduced. They didn’t even bother to update the Aveo5/Pontiac Wave hatchbacks when they restyled the sedan!

They should come out with a new brand and build all three of them. Just add some quality to them. Make sure the knobs and handles don’t fall off after the first 6 months.

Honda Fit & Scions of past generation with 1.5 L motors has “proved” the market. GM does need those cars more then they know: their clientèles will dies out soon. They need inexpensive small car to bring in gen Y (and maybe X) into showroom. With cost of gas and cost of Hummer (over 30 large) this will not happen. They need small Saturn to hook kids in. But, it must be quality above and beyond what Daewoo can deliver.

I liked all three concepts, though I am not sure this size of car (sub B segment) will sell in the U.S. Maybe GM should consider utilizing these three designs to expand the Aveo B segment vehicle lineup. I would like to see a three door hatchback coupe based on the Beat, a five door hatchback based on the Groove (my favorite of the three), a mini-crossover based on the Trax, and then redesign the sedan to keep the Aveo name. This would give Chevrolet a lineup to counter products from Toyota/Scion, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, and Nissan.

Here’s another mistake by the automotive world.

Did the voters not say the Beat? You know what I’ve begun to hate about the automotive world, is that the automotive designers don’t care what the people want! A balance between an economical car to build and sell, and a car the people want is bliss, and I believe the people have spoken with the Beat. The difference wouldn’t be that big and hey, so what if it’s not in tune with Chevrolets design right now? Do you not understand that we are not asking for the Groove, which reminds me of Chevrolets current minivan offerings (compare the two for a second and you’ll fully understand what I’m saying)? The Beat actually really looks good, although the hatchback shown by Ford recently would blow it off the road considering popular design.

The main reason they need to make one of these cars, even if they don’t profit, is to improve their image. I like that GM may do the Groove instead of the Beat, eventhough the Beat won, it only won by about 1% of the vote, and if the Trax hadn’t been in the competition the Groove probably would have won, they were very similar (both 4 door wagons). This was an internet vote so the whole world could vote, it wasn’t limited to just the U.S.A. The Scion XB has already proven that a vehicle like this can be popular and IMO the Groove is MUCH better looking than the first gen XB. If GM were to do just one of these for the US market instead of two or all three, the Groove is the right choice. The Tiny Suburban look is sweet, I’d buy one! :)
