Details leaked on 2009 Acura TL

04/13/2008, 2:18 PM

By Drew Johnson

As of late, dealer shows are proving to be a valuable source of insider information. Last week at Ford’s dealer meeting in Las Vegas, it was revealed that Ford was indeed working on a high-performance off-road version of the F-150 — dubbed the Raptor. And now, just a few weeks after Honda/Acura’s dealer meeting in New Orleans, information has been leaked about the upcoming 2009 Acura TL.

According to a source who attended the meeting, the 2009 Acura TL lineup will consist of two models: a base front-wheel drive car and an up-level all-wheel drive model. The front-driver will be powered by a 280 horsepower 3.5L V6 whereas the AWD model will receive its motivation from a 3.7L V6 producing 300 horsepower.

Despite boasting 300 horsepower and all-wheel drive, the range-topping model will not sport the Type-S nameplate. In fact, the source says that Acura will not offer a Type-S model, at least not in 2009 guise. It remains unclear if the performance model will eventually join the lineup.

Acura has promised us a new TL by the end of the year so a Los Angeles Auto Show reveal seems likely.

I hope they bring back the CL too
I hope that they make a Type S tsx with some SH AWD
THe only issue I see is the price point hasto increase but its defeinetely worth it for such a luxurious reliable PROVEN car Im willing to spend the extra buck s
I have been seeing that they are comparing this to the E class etc and thats wrong this current one competes with the Es 350 and the 3 and G35 The RL is for the GS and M45 E class 5 series
I dont know if that will change with the 09 Model

A wagon variant would be nice… in the same vein as Avant, 3/5, and C/E. Also, there are rumors of CTS and G sport wagons.

The current one looks pretty nice, but personally it’s nothing more than a “car”. Not really exciting to drive, not really exciting to be in, and not even many great luxury features, just the regular list of add ons. Not much more than a Euro Honda Accord slightly resized (based off the Euro Accord), similar to the Cavalier and Cadillac platform back a few years. I’m curious if this models advertised horsepower and torque ratings are a little over estimated again. And once again, I’m not so sure what Acura doesn’t get about a V-8, I’m sure one 8 cylinder engine in the entirity of Honda’s lineup would generate some value and interest.

Jon- GM’s already confirmed a CTS sport wagon, but I haven’t heard anything about a G wagon. For some reason, I can’t imagine that at all.

The current one looks pretty nice,
Opinion it is a VERY nice looking car with a design way ahead of its time very sports and sharp

The TL has a lot of personality and is more than a car its really exciting to look at as well as drive as I have driven one. Just like all Acura’s the TL comes loaded with every luxury feature you could want unlike a BMW 3 series where you have to buy a package for everything. The only option is the navi and I think that should be standard but a lot of cheapskates want a luxury car but want to cheap out on the options

The TL has different sheet metal, interior and driving dynamics from its Accord cousin.

The Cavalier and the Cimmaron were the same vehicle with the front and the back changed they managed to force a V6 in that car and unlike that terrible comparison the Accord and the TL are best sellers and always on the recommended list. Both have extremely high resale and are known for reliability so that stmt was just false. Most cars that come from the General past an present are a disappointment and have not been able to best their Japanese competition. The Cimmaron is so bad that Jackjimpussy wont even acknowledge it

I do agree with you that I am mad that they exaggerated the cars hp by 5hp That’s really an exaggeration on Acuras part. Your stmnt was more exaggerated that the rating

I’m really quite mystified at the styling funk all the Japanese marques seem to be in the midst of. They’ve all fallen into what can only be described as a ’safe zone’. This new TL seems to typify the humdrum efforts coming out of Japan. I would even go so far as to say the Koreans are making more strides in exterior design- and that’s really reaching for something good to say.

The domestics have a real opportunity here to turn the tide. With very few exceptions given a particular era, they have always produced the best looking cars. For example I saw a well preserved Lumina Z34 Coupe this weekend and as it drove by I couldn’t help but think that’s still a cool looking f*cking car. OK I’m slightly biased because I used to own one, but the 2nd thought that ran through my head was how much money has the guy spent to actually keep that thing on the road.

Now, however, the quality gap has narrowed and the domestics still make the best looking cars. If the Japanese insist on putting out yawners like this Acura I firmly believe even the most loyal are going to find themselves straying from the nest even if it’s just to have look at what all the excitement is about on the other side of the Auto Mall.

1115: my post was directed at styling which is subjective. The Z34 and even the Euro Lumina 2 doors in my opinion were the best looking cars in their class and even going head to head with their NASCAR rival Thunderbird which was rear drive I still prefer the Chevy.

Like I said I owned one. The 3.4 Twin Dual Cam was an overly complicated disaster looking for a place to break stuck in a front drive engine bay that could barely accommodate the block never mind all the accessories and running gear. These were a nightmare to work on and eventually I gave up trying.

If you recall, however, no one else was even close to getting 210 horse out of a FWD six in the 3.0l range in the early ’90s. That, unfortunately, was the typical Chevy issue of the day- Quad 4 owners will also probably express similar misgivings- too much about ego and not enough about refinement.

That much I will give you. Almost 2 decades later, however, your little bull**** rant no longer applies.

Well the addition of AWD would make the TL the only sedan model worth buying from Acura. 300HP is standard nowadays so what remains to be seen is the pricing. If it’s low enough, just like any other Acuras, it would make a nice alternative to the G35x.

^^^ tripleonefive, are those numbers correct? What cars/engines are you comparing?

I’m actually wondering whether Acura’s using direct injection, b/c that’s pretty much the last thing I’d be looking for, and a GOOD PRICE POINT.

Not on the TL, but on the upcoming TSX Type-S.
Things I’m looking for:
SH-AWD – check
Dual-clutch transmission w/paddle shifters – check
turboed 260 hp engine – check
direct-injection – ?
cheaper than the 125i – ? … better be!

Oh, and if they made a coupe version of the TSX Type-S, w/ more aggressive styling, that’d be the bomb.

Keep that price down, Acura!

I’m with 1115 on this one. I think the pre-2004 TL was a yawner, which was just before the time I was in the market for a sport sedan. But, I’ve been very happy with my ‘05 TL. Maybe underneath it all, the TL is a lot more Honda than Acura owners care to admit, but if you drive a TL, it won’t feel like a Honda.

SW-AWD is the best news. How I longed for it back when I bought my TL. It should up the competitive ante.

The TL is a strong seller and the improvements will keep it in that vein. With escalating gas prices, new CAFE regs and the like, I think the automotive public will forgive the absence of a V-8 in a non-top-of-the-line model (especially since Caddy’s been very vocal in its refusal to develop a new Northstar V-8…. it’s just the sign of the times).

And by the by, this past New Year’s Eve I was rear-ended on a snowy day by a guy driving a large truck or SUV who fled the scene. I saw the headlights coming in the rear-view moments before impact, so I–thankfully–was able to brace my neck. $21,000 in damage later, I walked away with one night’s headache and a slightly sore neck…. though I have the kind of job where that’s how I usually leave the office anyway.

So, styling, performance, value, and SAFETY. There may be fierce competition in the mid-size sport sedan market, but you’ll never count me among the TL haters.

You would have gotten away with it if it werent for that 1115

Beginning in 2004, Ford dropped the old 4-cylinder Zetec engines in favor of MAZDA”S MZR design. Thus, 2005 and present Duratec 4-cylinder engines are Mazdas.

The Jaguar AJ-V6 engine is similar but adds variable valve timing. Mazda’s AJ version also has this feature.

Mazda increased engine displacement to 3.7 litres. Mazda states that the new engine generates 204 kilowatts (273 hp) and 366 newton metres (270 ft·lbf) of torque.[2] The engine went into production in June 2007 at Mazda’s engine plant in Japan.

Uh sit down
If you have some proof that this is better than any Acura or Infiniti engine please provide it
