Chrysler Imperial Concept

01/08/2006, 8:50 PM

By admin

The new 2007/2008 Chrysler Imperial Concept finally made its official debut at the Detroit auto show today. (Yesterday, Chrysler launched the Dodge Challenger Concept). Like the great Imperials of Chrysler’s storied past, the 2006 Imperial concept vehicle is designed as Chrysler’s flagship, a luxury sedan that is elegant, provocative, aspirational, yet attainable. For inspiration, the designers looked not only to the classic Imperials of the 1930s and 1950s but also to Chrysler’s long tradition of creative concept cars, from the earlier Chrysler d’Elegance and Falcon to the more recent Chrysler Chronos and Firepower. This rich heritage is expressed in the crisp line that parallels the sill, then arches up over the rear wheel and flows to the rear of the car, signaling that this is a powerful rear-drive automobile.

A similarly-shaped line rises up over the front wheel and flows rearward, falling slightly as in moves into the doors. To fully realize the subtleties of the chaste body surfaces, every area was lovingly hand-sculpted in the hallowed tradition of the custom coachbuilt LeBaron bodies of the classic era.

“The Imperial’s exterior artfully blends a stately nobility, hand craftsmanship, and modern dynamic sculpture and proportion,? says Mike Nicholas, principal exterior designer.

To realize the proportions the designers sought, the Imperial, mounted on a 123-inch wheelbase, is 17 inches longer and six inches higher than a 300 sedan. The roof was pulled rearward to enlarge the cabin as well as to create the luxury of length in side view. Most importantly, passengers sit nearly seven inches higher. Combined with the higher hood and deck and the large 22-inch aluminum wheels, this gives the Imperial the noble stance the designers envisioned.

V-shaped in plain view, the front end is dominated by a central upright radiator grille which imparts a stately eminence previously unobtainable in all but the most expensive of imported motorcars. Composed of narrow chiseled linear elements of brushed and polished aluminum, the grille is capped by a bright header emblazoned with the Chrysler wings. A polished molding, extending from the grille header to the base of the windshield, bisects the raised hood plane.

Nested beneath browed cavities, the polished aluminum parabolic pods housing the projector-beam headlights reprise the individual free-standing headlamps of the Imperials of both the early thirties and the early sixties. At the rear, the individual circular taillights with floating outer rings combine modern LED lighting with a look evocative of the signature “gun sight? taillights of previous Imperials. Separate slender LED lamp units provide for park, turn and back-up lamp functions.

Complementing the hood, the raised deck lid is also V-shaped and accented by signature silver wings that unfold across its surface.  Body ornamentation is confined to the upper bumper bars, side view mirrors, side window reveals, and the handsomely-sculpted door handles.

“We wanted everything inside to be nested, fitted and hand-crafted,? says Nick Malachowski, principal interior designer, “with every component subtly reinforcing the hand-sculpted look of the exterior.?

This is a driver’s car, with a minimum of distracting gadgetry. A simple touch pad with intuitive controls, mounted close-by on the suspended center console armrest, permits the driver to adjust settings for radio, climate and navigation functions. The driver air bag/horn pad is fixed, allowing the radio and cruise-control switches to remain settled in the same position regardless of the turning steering wheel. Boldly bisecting the uncluttered floating wood-and-bronze instrument panel are two large circular pods encircling sculpted gauges rendered in satin with polished aluminum bezels. Reminiscent of earlier Imperials, the exquisitely-detailed gauge faces are deliberately designed to satisfy the soul as well as inform the mind.

Since the windshield glass is carried up onto the mid-point of the roof, front seat occupants enjoy a comprehensive view of the passing scene. All glass has a distinctive bronze tint to harmonize with the car’s color palette. Rear passengers can recline their individual seats while watching different movies, thanks to the console-mounted dual-view entertainment screen and wireless headsets. The rear seat headsets store in the package tray at the touch of a button when not needed.

Finally, there is the luxury of expressive illumination inspired by the artistry and elegance found in modern interior architecture. LED lighting, placed behind the “floating? elements of the instrument panel and doors, is used to enhance the sculptural elements of the interior. LED lights also provide indirect cove lighting for the headliner, which in addition offers the choice of electroluminescently-lit fabric or directed-beam spotlights located in the overhead console.

“For inspiration, the designers looked not only to the classic Imperials of the 1930s and 1950s but also to Chrysler’s long tradition…”

More like inspiration from the 1983 film Vacation. The “Wagon Queen Family Truckster”, except this is a sedan. Big, bulbous, obnoxious, owl-eyed, just a few words that come to mind when looking at this blatant – wannabe – Rolls Phantom. Almost something you’d find trolling NY’s Chinatown displayed amongst the dozens of fake Rolex’s and Versace sunglasses.

What’s with the black-eye halo around the headlights & the ’steamer ship’ grille. Lose em’. The designers need to relax. Relax.

Not to be completely negative, the interior is sweet & looks well engineered. If anything near this classy was in the 300, Magnum, Charger, Challenger… I’d own all of them.

If I didn’t know better, GM’s designers have migrated en masse to Chrysler. Chrysler’s usual sophisticated styling has been replaced by the blunt, ham-fisted look that currently manifests itself on many of GM’s cars. Oh, and I just saw a picture of the new Jeep Compass: the Pontiac Aztez designer has found work at Chrysler as well.

This is one of the ugliest cars i have seen from the NAIAS thus far. Does anyone else notice that it’s not symetric? There’s one thing to build unique cars, there’s another to take an old high priced vehicle and simply slap your name on it. The retro game can only go so far, and preferably with a vehicle that your company produced. I dont believe the rolls royce was a chrysler?

It is easily the best looking car at its projected price range. This car will put to shame the other “luxury cars” in its price range. I don’t understand why people insult this car. I believe its envy. This car makes a strong and noble impression. Why are people upset that Chrysler makes a beautiful car that resembles one that you can only dream of owning? They make the dream obtainable. There are plenty of affluent people who purchase Chrysler’s and this will only increase that population while bringing in new fans. Not everyone is dumb enough to think that you have to validate your self worth (financially) by paying ridiculous prices to drive a nice looking and performing car. Unlike many other luxury cars that cruise by and no one cares, this one is eye-catching in a very good way. People need to stop making negative comments about Chrysler’s vision. It doesn’t make sense. They want more people to experience the feeling of lavish living. I know some rich people will hate that because they want it to be exlusive to themselves, but for others…you really need to start making some sense. I personally love this car and pray that it goes into production. Chrysler will make another killing of this vehicle.

And….I would like to see you pull up a car between 40K – 60K (its projected MSRP) next to it and see if anyone even blinks towards your car…..I highly doubt it. Ohhh yeah….as for poor man rolls…..I’d like to see poor men who can afford to pay 60K on a car…

The “Imperial” is a testament to the ‘fearlessness’ of the designers at Chrysler, and I enthusiastically salute them!!!!!! I hate these car companys that are to scared to go out on a limb and build somthing ‘SUPER FRESH’ like the “Imperial.”This car is EVERYTHING I’ve ever dreamed of in a luxury vehicle, and I will most definatly own one ,or two, of my own. From the polised grill ,to the bumper, from the awsome 22″ rims to the roof, from the gorgeous two tone leather interior,to the suicide doors… This car is FLAWLESS…In my hometown of Memphis,TN this is what we call a “pimpin ass ride”,that EVERY baller should have, black, or ,white, red, yellow, or purple. The true lovers of luxury should be ecstatic on the coming of “The Imperial.” This is not just a car….its a STATEMENT!!!!!!!!!! Great Job Chrysler!!!!!!! Stay fearless!!!!!!!

Please, please make this so I will be able to sport this in the Dallas area. I predict all of the big time Bishops, Pastors and Ministers here in our Metroplex will be in line for one. THE CAR IS NICE. BUT ITS NOT A RR. THE PRICE SHOULD BE AROUND 45,000.00 .ANOTHER PROBLEM IF THE BACK SEAT WILL NOT ACCOMODATE 3 PASSENGERS THEN IT WILL LOOSE ALOT OF SALES. MOST FAMILIES HAS 2 OR 3 KIDS.I WOULD CONSIDER BUYING ONE ONLY IF IT HAD ROOM IN THE BACK FOR 3 PEOPLE.

THE PERSON THAT WILL PURCHASE THIS CAR HAS TO BE AWARE IF ITS TO LONG IT WILL NOT FIT IN THE GARAGE. TO PURCHASE A CAR LIKE THIS IT HAS TO KEPT IN A GARAGE.
THE LENGTH OF THE CAR IS 216″ LONG. THE AVERAGE GARAGE IS 200″205″ LONG. I KNOW WHEN I GET HOME TONIGHT I WILL MEASURE THE LENGTH OF MY GARAGE.

THEY SHOULD OFFER 2 OPTIONS FOR THE BACK SEAT.
————————————————
OPTION A. WITH CENTER CONSOLE.
OPTION B. WITHOUT THE CENTER CONSOLE.

MOST FAMILIES WILL NOT PURCHASE THIS CAR IF THIER IS NO ROOM FOR 3 PASSENGERS IN THE BACK SEAT.
I KNOW I WOULD NOT EVEN CONSIDER IT.

ANOTHER VERY IMPORTANT OPTION.
THE SEATS TO BE FLAT, NOT CURVED. PEOPLE LIKE TO SEAT ON A FLAT SURFACE NOT CURVED SURFACE.

THIS IS MY SUGGESTION , THE CAR HAS POTENTIAL THATS FOR SURE, BUT IT MOST GIVE THE CUSTOMER WHAT THEY WANT. NOT WHAT CHRYSLER WANTS TO BUILD.

Tere was a time that the auto writers were beating up Chyrsler when Mercedes became a part of this company, they were worried that Chyrsler would go by the way side and continue to build crap cars like the past, because MErcedes wouldn’t care about Chyrsler.
I have been selling Chyrsler for more than 20 years, now is the first time in 20 years that I sell one of the most popular cars built. Mercedes has a lot to do with this, it has been the biggest blessing to have them on board, Chrysler takes chances Ford and GM refuse to take. All the cars they have made prove this, the PT, Pacifica, Liberty The 300 the Challenger concept which will go into production and now the Imperial.Ford and GM better wake up because Chrysler is Kicking butt.
Daimler / Chrysler what a marriage this has turned out to be, me and my pay check hope the continue to be very happy together for many many years to come..

This is 2006, so a lot of young people that missed the wave of big cars back in the 70’s can now cash in on some auto history. I hope Chrysler reissue the Dart. This Imperial concept intrigues me so much that I am going to put my purchase on hold. I have been looking at the Cadillac DTS and the Lexus LS 430. I like the style of the 300C but feel it is does not have as plush an interior as I would like in a luxury car. I do not see the need to add the suicide doors nor increase the size 17 inches over the 300. I think Chrysler has a great idea here in coming out with a distinctive car. This comment is for anyone who feel that this car should be priced between $40k and $60k you obviously must be nuts a car of this caliber is worth so much more than you people say it should. People buy BMW, Cadilacs, Benz, and all other luxury cars and spend $70k and above on them so why can’t Chrysler come out with a very expensive car? Do you want to know why, because all you middle class people who are driving 300’s, charger’s and etc. can afford a luxury car without spending a ton of money on it, but thats not fair to the rich people who have the money to spend on such a car that fit them that everyone can afford. So for all you underachievers I hope Chrysler do price the Imperial low so everyone on your street can have one with you. Maybe you all can form a Imperial car club yeah that will be great! truly unbelievable that so many people are unimaginative in their criticism of innovative and retro/foward thinking design. conceptually this car is stunning. edgy. suave. the debate over the beauty and suppleness of this design is similiar to the debate over which breasts are better, ie., implants or natural, if you truly love breasts, you can appreciate both, it makes no difference as long as you are able to get your hands on one. similiarly if you can appreciate luxury, beauty, class, presence, and drop dead gorgeous good looks, you will not need to apologize for owning this car. thank god for clean, respectful, bodacious design.

I do’t believe anyone who finds an audi beautiful, sophisticated and classy would look twice at this lumpen pile of high depreciating metal. Copying a Rolls Royce doesn’t mean the end result will be classy. This car has poor proportions, poor details and zero panache. The valet parkers at spago or the bel air country club would wet themselves laughing if you turned up in this thing and expected to be taken seriously.

Now that I have seen the new Chrysler Imperial, I am totally blown out of the water. If the car is to hit the market, I am sure I would be the first one at the dealership purchasing one. I hope that Chryler manufacturers are working on making this car their best production ever. I am sure they are not going to let their customers down. WTF? This car is nothing else than a cheap and lousy copy of the “Rolls Royce Phantom”. The Design is terrible, but what do I expect? American cars looks bad, so what? There are only some american cars which are nice: p.e. dodge viper, all the muscle-cars, GT40, hmm… I don´t know more cars which are nice ;) In comparison to the 300C this car sucks. But maybe I´m spoiled, because in my neighbourhood, there are the nicest cars ever, p.e. Enzo, Quattroporte, Continentel GT, many BMW and Mercedes and so on and all this nice cars are European ones. So in Europe there are the nicest cars ever:

Love it or hate it, DMX should and will build this car. It may not look just like this and that may be a good thing… but This car is what Chrysler and the American luxury market needs. If for only one reason, it will be a RWD American luxury car. Soon to be the only RWD American Luxury car. Cadillac is slowing coming back to RWD, but no one is chopping up STS’s yet. Lincoln is dropping the town car, or replacing it with a FWD Volvo based varient. If you’re not following me yet, wait till you see these imperials about 4-10 feet longer taking up the slack where Cadillac and Lincoln left the livery service sector high and dry. I’m ready to order a small a fleet of these money makers ASAP. Hurry up Chrysler, let’s go.

In my opinion, an absolute shocker ! I recall many Imperial’s of the past with great fondness, in particular the two door, bustle back Imperial of the early 1980s. But this is design overkill, the drugs have seriously kicked in and the effect is not good, not good at all.

The 300C, now on sale here in Australia and doing well, is a stunner that commands to be noticed and so it should be, it’s hot. This Imperial concept is just a rape job of a Rolls, a 300C an old Cadillac Seville, an ugly and overpriced Maybach and a box of foil Christmas deorations.

As someone in an earlier post said, the designers simply need to “relax, just relax”. Just classic design simplicity thank you.

I have been waiting for this new Chrysler Imperial every since they stopped building them. I owned a 1975 2 door Chrysler Imperial with the loose cushion seats that Recardio Montalban talked about. Pure luury and a lot of people did not know what it was and had never seen one. It was a perfect car and i put almost 300,000 miles on it and it still ran when i got rid of it. If i had not lost my job at the time, i would have kept it as a classic. I like the 1968 Chrysler Imperials especially the convertables with all the lights on the rear. I would have taken the rear lights from the 1968 Imperial and put them on this concept. I will buy this car and would like to have more info.
