Detroit automaker imports Indian pickup truck for U.S. testing

If you’ve ever wondered what an Indian-built diesel pickup would look like on American highways, here’s the answer to that (oil)-burning question. You wouldn’t be the only one wondering, either. At least one domestic manufacturer wants to know how it drives too, so they bought this overseas version of Mahindra’s upcoming U.S. pickup to try Michigan roadways.

Originally expected to be sold as the Appalachian in America, Mahindra’s unnamed truck is expected to go on sale in the U.S. in the summer of 2009. A source at the company says they want to put the focus back on the Mahindra brand rather than a specific model, so an alphanumeric name is likely.

Mahindra’s truck will be powered by the company’s new mHawk 2.2-liter inline-four-cylinder diesel engine. The mHawk was designed in cooperation with diesel engineering firms Bosch and AVL with the American pickup market in mind.

Power ratings are expected to be in the range of 145-150 horsepower and approximately 300 pounds-feet of torque. The engine will be paired with a standard six-speed automatic transmission, a floor-mounted console shifter and steering-wheel-mounted paddles to manually shift the gearbox.

Mahindra promises the truck will be able to carry a sizeable 1.3-ton (2,600-pound) payload in its 7.5-foot cargo box. It will come with a 60,000-mile, four-year bumper-to-bumper warranty. The tall roll bar in back of the truck is for testing only. And we hear that the people at Mahindra were surprised to find this lone truck in Michigan. We can only guess which manufacturer purchased it…

This is a worthy and strong competitor to the Toyota Turdra or the Honda Crodgeline, but it will take another iteration or two before it competes with a Silverado or an F150.

LOVE the mid 70’s mini-pickup styling. Box looks like my 79 LUV! Just keep it simple, cheap, efficient, and tough, and they’ll find a lot of folks who need a little work truck and want to save some dough on operational costs vs. an F150 or Silverado. Just hope it doesn’t take too damn long for them to do it.

Paddle shifters in a pickup sound stupid, but o.k., I just want to see how quality does. They could pick up the design a little bit while they’re at it as well.

Not the best-looking pick-up out there, but if they make it bullet-proof, it’ll be a hit. I mean, *really* dependable, will go through any kind of terrain and can haul almost anything…that’s what people are looking for in such a pick-up.

No thanks. I’ll even take the current Ranger over this. Size-wise the two are comparable, but reliability of Mahindra is very suspect. Also, the dealer network is going to be weak, making it hard to get anything fixed. Feel free to be the first to buy an Indian truck on the block. I am just not sure if anyone wants to advertise that fact.

Johnny, box and ugly don’t go together. Any box is better then a rod, in my humble opi.

I would prefer 6 speed manual. Actually this is what working truck should be: efficient and torque. No redneck will buy this to impress neighbor, but to move **** around its perfect.

“we can only guess which manufactorer purchased it”….All LLn’s has to do is run the plate and find out which company owns it. Its $30 to run it and find out…spend the money and tell us…its news! The trailer “stinger” says “TRW” on the rear…maybe TRW is testing components for other countries…its really ugly, but 30MPG’s will sell.

I think I can build something as crappy as that by using a lawnmower for the engine and wheels, and some junk in my back yard. My creation will probably look better too, and it will be able to cut grass unlike that waste of space.

I thought(on this very site.. I know the info can be found easily on an internet search)… this thing gets 40 MPG(or up to) hwy,this diesel?
So, 40 MPG, 300 torque, can carry 2,600 lbs? I know many people , if quality is there(and price, etc..) would check this out.
My neighbor doesn’t drive their truck hardly at all anymore since fuel prices are nuts, and he said they get 17 hwy.
All they do is small projects; buy garden supplies, carry lawnmower around( once a month, he loads up his “smaller” riding mower, drives 10 miles, and mows his elderly parents yard), etc..
Lumber… tie it down, if the boards are 8 ft long, and the bed is 7.5 ft long, put a red flag on the end, if there’s law’s about it where you live(like here).

40 MPG…. that is a big plus right now, if you have any diesel truck that gets 17-22MPG, and all you need is for home stuff.

First and foremost I believe the independent importer brought it in for testing. Why not?

Front end is trying to look like a Nissan Frontier, and the rest looks like an old Toyota Hi-Lux. Did no one learn anything from the Yugo GV, or the Daihatsu Charade? Untested crap cars. Piece of ****. It will do better roaming the streets of Mumbai dodging mopeds and cows. Maybe Dell computers could buy a fleet of these trucks to transport their tech support crews to work. “Hello, my friend.”
