This is a good PR move.

pavlindrom: you're right.

Fleming in Tennessee: "Malibu is a much better name than Cam-Ray, Cam-Ree, Camie-Ray." It's also a much better car.

NipponRules: "I don’t see much for complaints on sports forums about a mediocre baseball player making 20 million a year." That's because the ballplayer has donesomething to suggest he's WORTH (at least in baseball's bizarre economics) $20 million a year.

beatusmongous: I had a Ford Tempo that I let run out of oil TWICE, and it still lasted to 130K or so before I sold it. Or about 40k longer than My honda civic. But I know it sucked, because there was a blue oval on it.

Point taken on the survey vs. sales figure, and another for a couple of ford owners that swear on reliability. Those are valid points, but lets keep in mind that when purchasing a car a smart consumer would research before they buy. And to that extent, the big 3 just doesnt rank high on affordability, safety, cost of ownership, etc. Keep in mind that the big 3 have been in business longer than any import car manufacturers in this country so naturally there will be a loyal fan base. The problem though is that these imports (German, Japanese, etc.) have risen to the challenge in a relatively short amount of time. They must have been doing something right and that's where the big 3 missed the bus.. Of course the #1 selling commercial van, SUVs, large family sedans, etc will go to the big 3. Other manufacturers aren't in those market! Those are mostly rental fleet vehicles! which brings me back to quantity vs quality. Look at peoples driveway and you'll see what I'm talking about.

As for choosing car B because they couldn't afford car A, I think it's clear that with this economic problem people have been buying car A that they couldn't afford in the first place. And they're force to drive it 200,000+ miles until they save up enough money to buy their next car. Hopefully by then the big 3 will have figured something out.

Nippon, I've never been to a sporting event that I've ever paid for. Just thought I'd share.

Wait, I take that back. I paid for one ticket so I could take a girl one time, but my ticket was free (media). But then, being media, I get into a lot of events for free.

Fleming and Ryan, The most reliable car I ever owned was a Ford. I drove it like I stole it for three years. In that three years, I put 65,000 miles on it. I did maintain it... ...sort of... ...changed the brakes and oil a couple of times... ...but it never gave me problems. I paid $8,000 for it (used), and traded it in it for $6,000 three years later.

What a terrible car it was! I'm so dissatisfied! Ford sucks! (/sarcasm off)

When looking at surveys, we need to remember that only a small portion of the population is sampled during a survey. There is a lot of room for error. Just because a survey says that 90% of people sampled prefer sunrise over sunset doesn't mean that 90% of the world is the same. I'd trust sales figures over surveys, because sales figures show what people are purchasing on a 100% accuracy basis. No one is forced to buy a car. Some people may want Car A, but can't afford it, which will inherently cause dissatisfaction with Car B that they chose instead. But they still purchased Car B, which means they had to have liked it in some way. Otherwise, they would have chosen Car C. The survey will show the person to be unsatisfied with Car B, even though they paid $25,000 for it. But they seldom have reasons for their dissatisfaction, which in this particular case would be that they preferred another car that they couldn't afford at the time.

Just 2¢.

Ford just picked up several top 5-star crash awards and their vehicles have always been very reliable. I personally own a '97 Econoline with 400,000+ trouble free miles on it. Neither the 4.6 V8 nor the C6 tranny have ever been touched! It doesn't even leak oil! I basically could not wear it out and gave it to a nephew who recently drove it cross country and back without a hitch. I purchased a new '06 because I grew tired of driving the '97 for so long! The '06 already has 100,000+ miles on it without a single problem. And by the way, those quantity sales weren't forced on anyone....they're what folks wanted at the time. It's the corporate way, when you've got a hot product, push it to the limit until the next hot product comes through.

I am not a fan of million dollar executive salaries however find it funny how people get on these forums and bitch about the dollars that executives and management make. I don't see much for complaints on sports forums about a mediocre baseball player making 20 million a year. That's enough to pay 300 average family incomes. Do the fans who probably are many that bitch about their bosses salary and perks think much about that when they pay $100 a pop to go to a sporting event?

Lol.. congrats fleming you've just listed the arguments against the big 3 in that they build quantity rather than quality.. Look at surveys that shows customer satisfaction, top resale value, 5 star crash test ratings, initial quality, cost of ownership, etc.. you might be surprise at what you'll find.. Look, the big 3 still has great products and they have a huge fan based but they are on the verge of becoming bankrupt. You can't discount the fact that they've made some questionable calls when it comes to management, which affects products that go out on the market.. (i.e. over saturation of rebadged vehicles etc.) When circuit city filed for bankruptcy it's not that they were selling garbage, they weren't in touch with the consumers the way their rivals like Best Buy have been.. Again, I'm not hatin on the big 3 but they need a good pep talk so they can pull their heads out of their a**

As for the Camry, that sounds like a soap I find at a drugstore that's always on sale..

Malibu is a much better name than Cam-Ray, Cam-Ree, Camie-Ray: there is no way to say that name with any feeling. What does it mean? #1 selling full sized pickup: F150; #1 selling full sized commercial van: Econoline; #1 selling compact truck: Ranger; #1 selling sports car: Corvette; #1 selling sporty car: Mustang; #1 selling convertible; Mustang; #1 selling full sized passenger van: Econoline; #1 selling compact Hybrid SUV: Escape Hybrid; #1 selling large family sedan: Impala; #1 selling large SUV: Surburban.....and they weren't building vehicles American's wanted? When sales fell off the chart over night, due to high fuel and dried up credit, no one could forecast for that! There were new economy/hybrid vehicles in the pipeline, but it takes time. American owned auto industry is the back bone of American industry and has historically pulled the US out of recession after recession. Don't forget, FoMoCo made a profit earlier this year B-4 the perfect storm.

I agree. But I feel they already have learned a lesson. To see the difference between the last time they did a product line update and this latest product line full shift says they've learned something. The execs might still have a few things to learn, when it comes to personal expenditures, but they're still making a lot of necessary changes. Honestly, short of getting rid of Saab and Hummer (an impossible task), I think they've taken most of the major steps already, toward a turnaround.

They're adjusting to the market. This is what everyone is telling them to do. They need to downsize their SUVs and make more fuel efficient trucks. The GMT SUVs are already making the transition to unibodies (Escalade), Ford and GM both have trucks models designed to optimise efficiency as well as make use of hybrid technology, not to mention the two new baby Diesels for their half tonnes. They've got hybrids coming out the wahoo, and alternative fuels are a major focus. GM is putting more into EV technology than any other major automaker, and pioneered E-flex, which is really just a rehash of a technology they've been using in trains for decades.

Honestly, they've got the product, if only they had the time and SOME kind of breathing room with the media. I'd guess that every time the WSJ uses the words Bankrupt and any of the Detroit three in one sentence, 100 buyers on the fence just made the decision to buy an import. If Toyota got even half the negative publicity that GM has (as in every time Toyota screws up the media world would completely erupt) they would be losing sales at an alarming rate too. All the reasons people had to stop buying domestics five years ago have all but disappeared. It's all up to public perception and mainstream media has a majority of the role in that.

I am actually aware of Ford's intent to bring in other models into our shores (thanks to LLN) the problem though is that they're a year or two late and it only accelerated because everybody has been calling for them.. The big 3 are too big to die, and as a fan of the auto industry I am rooting for them to get back on their feet.. But they need to stop pretending and blame themselves for this mess.. They can certainly regroup and learn from their mistakes but it could take a couple of years.. Kudos to the mustang redesign, camaros, and challengers.. I'll reserve judgment for the volt until they can make it affordable, a hybrid chevy malibu is a better deal..

And while we're on this topic: Can the Malibu be renamed as part of the terms for a bail out? I don't know about you but "mali-boo" sounds like a baby blue minivan with a puffy steering wheel cover driven by a retired man in his fifties.. I thought chevy was on a roll when they unveiled this car until I heard what it was called..

And while we’re on this topic: Can the Malibu be renamed as part of the terms for a bail out? I don’t know about you but “mali-boo” sounds like a baby blue minivan with a puffy steering wheel cover driven by a retired man in his fifties.. I thought chevy was on a roll when they unveiled this car until I heard what it was called..

What crap are you talking about, exactly? And give me a reason why it doesn't sell, other than the fact that gas prices WERE too high.

Also, I don't see anyone from Detroit demanding anything.

There is nothing well intentional about demanding handout from government. Rescued ones should sold all those vehicles to the public in open competition and we would not have those hearings. If that crap could be sold, there would be no need for humiliation.

If you think the last three years of D3 sales has anything to do with the true value, quality, and market desires, you're really eating it all up. It has everything to do with what you see on TV and read in the papers. (DOOM DOOM DOOM-GAS GUZZLER-RELIABILITY ISSUES-PLUMMETING STOCKS-DOOM DOOM DOOM)

Hey, now we agree. They can definitely afford to kill off some hopeless product. What you said before was quite different. And yes, I think everyone agrees that they need to get costs down to compete, which would have a lot to do with that extra $2000 per vehicle that is dedicated to Union/Pension costs.

Mazda is no longer controlled by Ford, that's why I didn't mention them. I also don't know why Saab even exists, and why, of all groups, would GM buy them. I haven't seen a new Saab on the road in.......... ever! I really have never seen a brand new Saab other than at the dealership.

Everything you said after the word 'Saturn' shows me that you don't pay much attention to the news. Ford has already named at least four new European models they're bringing over, and have already started retooling for. And if the oil companies gave a shit about the D3, they never would have let it get to $145/bl. This proves that they are not in bed together, as people have been saying for so long. Big Oil chased Big Money, knowing it would cripple the domestic auto industry.

oldraven,

I don't have to make a big decision like that, I think the country has spoken. If the big 3 have such desirable cars then they wouldn't be in a mess they're in.. and it's one thing to make desirable cars it's another to price them within reach for most of us.. I'm not saying all big 3 products are garbage, I'm saying they can get rid of a lot of their cars and still be in business.. I'm surprise you didn't mention mazda but want all of saab to remain as is.. (in my opinion saab only generates hype in their concept cars) Also, GM should look into the Saturn lineup - they got rid of all their American cars and replaced it with Opel.. I think Ford would benefit from bringing their European cars into our shores.. There are all these templates from other brands that the Big 3 can emulate, the problem is that the people making these big decision weren't listening to us.. If it were up to me I would let the oil companies bail out the auto industry..

It's hilarious that armies of UAW members need to go to DC to parade in front of dem politicians who take union votes for granted year after year.

If that doesn't drive the point home that no politician gives a rat's butt about you, then nothing will.
"Change" ... my butt. The more things change, the more they stay the same. You obamabots got handed a bill of goods an bit the poisonous bait.

I'm glad ryanpstr doesn't get to make big decisions like this. (about getting rid of the rest)

So Ford should stop selling the Mustang, F-150, and Ranger, the entire Lincoln brand, and the Mountaineer? GM should stop selling the Enclave, don't even bother bringing out that ringer Lacrosse, the whole Cadillac line, Heavy Duty trucks, Colorado/Canyon, Impala, Traverse, Corvette, Vibe, Solstice, G8, G6, all of Saab, Astra, Sky, and Outlook? The vast majority of desirable vehicles that GM makes.

I agree American auto execs need those jets to travel around the world, but to go from detroit to washington on separate jets when your company is begging for a bail out? I think its the CEOs that need a lesson on fuel efficiency not the people in congress. No parades are necessary, unless laid off workers have nothing better to do. And what is real America? what's real in America is that the economy is down the drain and joe the plumber can't fix it. Design, build, and don't over saturate the market with re-badged cars.

Folks in Congress haven't a clue about what's going on in America's automotive world! They didn't know about America's hybrid vehicles, they didn't know about the new union contracts recently negotiated; about all they know about is how to enrich themselves! Go Get 'em Detroit, show 'em what real America is all about! American auto execs need those private jets to get around the world, remember they are world wide companies and saving time is a top priority. All world wide companies own private jets, get over it! And this just goes to show you can never, but never please everyone!!!!

So they are parading the most fuel efficient cars that the big 3 has to offer.. If I was a member of congress I'd be like.. all those cars outside you keep, everything else that wasn't on that parade you get rid of your lineup entirely.. that would get rid of 3/4 of the cars that everybody else doesn't want to buy..

Needless? Damn, man. When the vast majority of people think that the D3 haven't made anything but Corvettes and truck based SUVs for the past two decades, I'd say getting three fleets of green cars on National Television in a bid to prove that they're trying is anything but needless.

I think its a great idea, once the press moves in they will be hunting down government officials and bombarding them with questions, putting pressure on to actually make a decision... def bring more awareness and interest to this issue. I still find it funny tha the government will give trillions to a war nobody wanted, 1/4 trillion to wall street and 100's of billions more to citi group.
