The Dodge Dart, Chrysler's first competitive small car in several years, is officially on its way to dealer showrooms. Chrysler began shipments of the Dart from its Belvidere, Illinois assembly earlier on Friday.

In addition to marking Chrysler's first legitimate rival for vehicles like the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic in years, the Dart also represents the first vehicle borne of Chrysler's tie-up with Fiat. The Dart is based on the same front-wheel drive platform as the Alfa Romeo Giulietta.

Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne stopped by the Belvidere plant earlier this week to congratulate workers on the launch of the Dart.

When the Dart arrives on dealers lots it will carry a base price of $15,995. The $19,995 Dart Limited will stand as the range's flagship until the $22,495 R/T model arrives in the fall.

Chrysler is planning to boost employment at the Belvidere plant to 4,500 workers by the end of the year, according to The Detroit News.
