Dodge Caliber a hit overseas

09/06/2006, 11:25 AM

By admin

The United States isn’t the only place the Dodge Caliber is selling like hot cakes. According to a report by Automotive News Europe, the Caliber is enjoying a great deal of success in many European markets, with many customers now facing six-month waiting lists. “We underestimated demand for the product,” Chrysler’s Thomas Hausch told the trade publication. So far, the car has been on the market for three months overseas. Sales thus far have totaled 3,238 Calibers in western Europe. In 2005, Dodge sold 311 vehicles in total in the same market. The vehicles are selling “without any incentives,” a major dealer in Paris said.

What a lie, it has been decried as crude and unsophisticated in the UK press and I have yet to see a single one on the road. 1000 a month is not a huge hit. The European car market is as large as the US car market and 1000 a month in the US would not be called a huge hit. The Caliber may not have incentives but its being sold at giveaway no-profit pricing.

Keep it all in context. As the article says, Dodge sold 311 total cars in 2005, and now they have moved over 3K Calibers in only three months. So its not an overall hit, but rather a hit for Dodge. The car certainly has low grade materials but it’s a type of design (tidy little hatch) that Europeans discovered long ago works great.

While its good for Dodge to improve sales overseas (however large that increase maybe) blindless devotion doesn’t help them either, after a while (or already have) these companies will just stop innovating because “people will buy it anyway” which in turn makes the car uncompetive overseas.
Saying that people oversea’s are stupid because they don’t like it is also kind of moronic, they buy cars just like you do and if anything the market is more competive.

311 in a whole year, and 3200 in a quarter. I think that qualifys as somewhat of a hit, considering itll estimate out to about 12,000 cars a year, which may not seem like alot now, but Dodge is to Europe as Suzuki Cars is to America. If Suzuki sells 12,000 of one of their models in the American market its considered a hit.

Ok, take this into thought:
Caliber sales- 3,280
Ford Focus- 12,500
VW Golf- 50,000~

I just did some research on my own, noticing a few of you like to compare these three. Caliber sales are low, so yes they are a succsess for the amount of models being made. Dodge is not extremely succsessful in Europe, so these are actually pretty good sale numbers.

I believe I will stop posting if LLN doesn’t get a registration system and block a few people, as I cannot stop laughing at the comedious comments on this site (the “asshats”). We can’t forget, this is a GM site ;) and I believe some of you should do the same, as our knowledge is not put to good use commenting with a bunch of three year olds.

All these comments about the US auto industry (mostly by 12 year olds between episodes of what ever happens to be hip on Nickelodeon this month) are funny. I suppose GBR has a great industry don’t they? Now the rally cry is about ‘European’ automobiles. You need the whole continent to put together an industry. If it weren’t for Germany, there wouldn’t be any ‘British’ cars.
