Unlike the Neon, which was a four-door sedan, the Caliber is a mix between a small wagon and a hatchback.
It also has a bolder style than the Neon, some calling it chunky, but this is what Dodge was going for. Design cues include a large cross-hair grille, a Dodge family trait, and large flared fenders at each of the four corners.
The Caliber name-plate comes in a wide range of trim levels, starting with the SE, then SXT, SXT Sport Appearance, and the now range-topping R/T. The previous range-topping high performance SRT4 model was dropped in 2009.
The Caliber is available with three engines, all of the four-cylinder variety. Standard on the SE, SXT and SXT Sport Appearance trim levels is a 1.8-liter 16-valve four-cylinder with variable-valve timing. It generates 148 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque while maintaining 24 city and 30 highway mpg. The SE, SXT, and SXT Sport Appearance models also have an optional 2.0-liter 4-cylinder DOHC 16-valve dual VVT engine available as well.
The sporty R/T version features a standard 2.4-liter four-cylinder DOHC engine with 172 horsepower and 165 pound-feet of torque. Eighteen-inch chrome wheels are available to dress up the R/T.
All models come with a standard five-speed manual, and also are available with a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
The Caliber is also available with all-wheel drive, an Electronic Stability Program, 458-watt nine-speaker Boston Acoustics audio system with subwoofer, satellite radio, navigation system, stain-resistant seat fabric, reclining rear seats, illuminated cupholders, plus a ChillZone cooled beverage storage bin that can maintain four chilled 20-ounce bottles or cans.
The Boston Acoustics system includes articulating speakers that can swing down from the rear liftgate and provide music at a party or picnic gathering.
While critics are not too impressed with the Caliber's handling and ride, they praise the car for its voluminous back-seat and cargo space. The Caliber also benefits from recent upgrades on interior styling and materials.
