The Challenger is an American muscle car. Putting a sports car engine from the Viper is not the answer. Bore the 392 currently in the Challenger out to 426 cu. with an Eaton supercharger and it will be thge undisputed king of american muscle cars putting out 750 bhp.

First of all enough on bashing on the American cars!! I want to set some facts straight!! The challenger is a muscle car icon, not a sports car!! Yes the dont do that well on a track stock compared to a vette or other sports cars!! Because it isnt a sports car!! But there is always room for improvement, thats why there are aftermarket companies that sell better parts for handling and performance!! I feel bad for the guy that loves his German Vw GtI, I got news for you thats a chicks car or some kid in high school that just got his liscence!! Man , I dont understand why people dont ever talk about the americans company, beating the sport compact world at their own game!! Doesnt anyone remember the srt4 neon that not only out handled but out performed any four cylinder crap that was being offered!! Or how team chevy caviler and sunfire dominated the IHRA three season in a row with a 1.8 liter Eco Tech motor turbocharged!!! Or how about when the Americans entered in the drifting comp, and one two years in a row with the pontiac GTO!!!now the Ford mustang gt is dominating!! So whats up with all the hating !! I buy and drive American , not because im American !! But because I like what Americans build now!! I think they build a good product today!! I think alot of people just dont know anything about cars , let alone dont do any research and find out real facts!!

if what you are saying is true, then why did fiat take the risk? why are there so many people still buying cars from chrysler? why is chrysler still around? why are comparing BMW 3 SERIES (the holy grail of 4-doors) or the S5 to the challenger? why are you bashing 16 yr olds about playing a video game? don't you have anything better to do? GET A FREAKIN LIFE? GO BUY A BMW AND QUIT COMPLAINING.
and one more thing, how did you get past the word limit? ( i mean way to go in reinforcing ur point but DAMN!)

I want one. It better have an automatic or twin clutch though. Hopefully Chrysler learned that with the Ram SRT10. With the stick, nobody bought them. Gave us the Automatic, sales tripled. Stick-shifts suck in American traffic and in drag racing, which is the place where high power cars shine.

Truthfully though, I'd rather have the V10 in the next Grand Cherokee. Having owned SRT8 versions of the 300C and current Grand Cherokee, I can say from experience that the big power goes better in an AWD truck then it does in a rear wheel drive car. No worrying about lighting up the tires, its actually drivable in not so great weather, and its a great sleeper.

@CajuRican - G8 GT is a large 4 door sedan. And a 14.2 is an AWFUL run for you in that. My wifes boss drags his stock G8 GT and runs 13.5's all day. My stock GTI does 14.5 1/4's.
Also, I KNOW the Challenger is fast but it is just another example of Americas obsession with excess. It is not that great of a car as it is, dynamically speaking. Adding more power without addressing weight is not going to net a good result. That is just science and physics. No matter how much power you put in it, it still weighs north of 4,000 lbs in a "Sports Car".

Oh and I actually think an Evo for $40k is even MORE of a waste of money then this car. The Evo is a $15k Lancer with $25k worth of bolt-ons essentially.

I tend to prefer the Europeans when it comes to cars. I DO NOT like Asian cars for their appliance-like attributes and I DO NOT like the American cars because of their over-consumption and excess philosophy. Both the Asians and the Americans have yet to figure out how to build a complete car in my eyes.

Look at Car and Drivers 10 Best List, 4 are German (S4, 3-series, GTI - MY CAR, Cayman/Boxster), 4 are Asian (Fit, Accord, MX-5, Mazda3), and 2 are American (CTS and Fusion HYBRID ONLY). I actually really like the CTS and the Fusion.

I guess I just look at cars very different then a lot of American purists. I like my car to be competent in all areas and not just one. NOW, if I had a fleet of cars, maybe I would buy one that is so one dimensional as the Evo or this Challenger, but since I don't and I need one car to do it all, it cannot be this one.

What about this post?
TnTPhilly
Crud, I fell in my time machine again. Can’t wait until we bail this mess out…again.

We are on to something. This is the wrong direction and Chrysler is FAR from stable enough to be chucking out crap like this. This just shows a poor use of VERY minimal resources for Chrysler.

Just a different outlook. You will NEVER see a European car company make a car like this. It just doesn't happen. It is VERY American and if it makes me anti-American to be against a car like this, then so be it...

Not to metion how I feel about the American car companies' business practices. That is a whole other issue. I can see Chryslers headquarters in Auburn Hills from my office at work as I type this. Chrysler should have been left to fail.

@ slider5634--I remember reading somewhere (here I think......) that the Viper V10 is actually smaller in physical size than the 6.1L Hemi in the SRT8.

And on the SEMA concept, the hood was functional, a win in my opinion. Just build the d@mn thing already!!

@TornadoGTI -

Sorry, man, but you are way off base on most of your comments.

"No matter how much power Dodge gives this car, no one is going to buy it over a Mustang or Camaro."

Well, somebody's buying them, because I see them all over the place down here in NOLA.

"(Challengers) are ugly and boring."

Well, that may be your opinion, but my neighbor across the street has a black SRT8, and it makes me smile every time I see it!

"They need to cut 500lbs off the Challenger to make it even remotely compentent in the situation they want to compete in…the track."

I don't know, man. Said neighbor and I took our cars to the strip (I have a G8 GT) and he ran a 12.8 to my 14.2. And my car isn't exactly a slouch.

"This is a car that appeals to 16 year olds playing Midnight Club Racing on their Xbox’s."

Again, I think you're off base here. This car appeals to baby boomers (age 45 and up) who are now empty nesters with more disposable income and don't necessarily need a family car anymore. Those who grew up lusting after the original Challenger as kids and can now have one as grown-ups.

Just because you hate Dodge doesn't mean everyone else shares your opinion. And while most of Mopar's lineup has no appeal for me personally, the Challenger is a car I wouldn't mind having in my driveway. :)

Tornado is the type that thinks that $40k is ok for an Evo X but not for a Challenger. He'll also conveniently forget the Evo is rated at 16/22 mpg. Four cylinder huh??? Put down the magazines and actually go out to a track...

A V-10 option for $5k to $10k more would be worth it. Would be nice to have carbon fiber parts to shed a few hundred pounds to make up the difference in the extra wieght of the 10. But I'm also looking forward to the new 6.4. I think that engine is better suited. The last thing the challenger needs is more wieght on the front. Looks bitchen tho!

"That have poor residual values, poor fuel economy, poor performance, and are ugly and boring."

Last I checked, the resale value is holding up fairly well on the Challenger.

Poor fuel economy? I wouldn't exactly call 25 mpg highway on the R/T, which is what I own, poor.
There are plenty 4 and 6 cylinder imports that get worse highway mileage than that.

Poor performance? Well it all depends on what your intended purpose for this car is. You keep comparing these muscle cars to imports like BMW or Audi. I don't think most buyers of this car plan on racing them down some twisty mountain highway. If I wanted an import sports car that handles like it's on rails, I would have bought one.

Ugly and boring? That's not a statement of fact. That is your opinion. I think 90% of people out there would disagree with you on that one, even if they don't like the weight of the Challenger.

Have you even took into consideration the Die-Hard Mopar fans that would have chosen the Challenger over the Mustang or Camaro no matter what?

I looked at the Camaro and I was turned off by it's low headroom and claustrophobic interior. The Challenger fits me like a glove and I have no regrets. In fact, I am excited to get behind the wheel of this car every chance I get.

Holy Crap!!! How the heck did they get that engine under the hood. It must have taken some sort of massive shoe horn. I know there should be a lot of room under there, but the Viper V-10 isn't exactly what I would call a "small" engine.

Regardless, all I would like to say to Chrysler is "STOP TRYING TO QUELL THE MASSES AND GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER. WE'RE OVERDUE FOR A NEW VIPER!!!" Now's the time to start dumping your engineering efforts into a new Viper platform and to stop screwing around with shoe horning massive engines into places they were never meant to go.

shumpy -

I'm in Southeast Michigan, so I see a lot of Chrysler/Dodge in my driving. Maybe I just notice the occasional SRT8 because it stands out, unlike a Camry which I'm going to look past because - well, why would I look twice?? I meant the SRT8 is a common trim level for the Challenger, not when considering the whole North American market.

I hope they produce it, but I gurantee that it will be at least $5000 more than the current SRT8, which is already about $10,000 more for than the Camaro with almost the same HP. If Chrysler/Fiat aren't careful, the Challenger will go the way of the Do Do Bird if they don't eventually lower the price to be more competetive with the Mustang and Camaro.

Can we all just say "It's about ____ time!!" I can't help but feel thought that this is Italian influence. Two years ago they wouldn't even humor the idea. Plus, it's kind of like an Abarth tuned fiat. Sure, it was just a Fiat chassis.... but now it's got the fiery gates of hades trying to rip its way out from under the hood.

No matter how much power Dodge gives this car, no one is going to buy it over a Mustang or Camaro. The Challenger is big, heavy, and uninvolving in every way. Why is Dodge still around? They make NOT one appealing car these days. All of their cars perform at the bottom of their class. That have poor residual values, poor fuel economy, poor performance, and are ugly and boring.
I am not being anti-American, I am being anti-Dodge. GM and Ford have some compelling line-ups right now. I still wouldn't buy any of them but I can understand why people do. I cannot understand why someone would buy a current Dodge.
This is the complete wrong decision for Chrysler. This is what has led them to be in the trouble they are in right now. Building overpriced, inefficient, and ugly cars. Ford with its EcoBoost and GM now with direct injection and turbos is the right direction.
They need to cut 500lbs off the Challenger to make it even remotely compentent in the situation they want to compete in...the track. Sure, for street light drag races down Woodward (popular, major road in Detroit) it works great but anything else and it just falls by the wayside. This will cost more than a 335is or S5 and get rocked in the presence of just ONE turn by either of those cars. Not to mention that when you are driving home with your tail between your legs afterward, wishing you didn't have to make a turn in that race, your car is going to be louder then a diesel 18 wheeler, hotter then a convertible with its top down in death valley, and use as much gas as a Range Rover Supercharged.
This is a car that appeals to 16 year olds playing Midnight Club Racing on their Xbox's.

Oh, and the reason Challengers aren't common is because they suck. A Camaro SS and Mustang GT cost as much as a Challenger R/T but perform like an SRT-8. The SRT-8 lists from $43,000...FORTY-THREE THOUSAND. Both a Mustang GT and Camaro SS list for under $30,000. At $45,000 you would be MUCH better off buying a 335i coupe. The R/T does 0-60 as fast my my VW GTI yet does it with 157 more hp, twice as many cylinders with a capacity that is almost 3 times the size of my 2.0L. Just an extremely inefficient car.

If you haven't noticed yet, I HATE Dodge. I would sooner buy a Kia or a Hyundai than a Chrysler/Dodge. I cannot think of ONE car, that Dodge or Chrysler makes, that exceeds at its intended purpose. NOT ONE. MAYBE the Ram... Trucks abide by different standards than cars though. They don't have to be nice and involving and emotional. They just have be raw. Lots of power and lots of strength is what makes a good truck. Unfortunatley Chrysler doesn't realize that cars don't abide by those rules.

I have seen things beast on the public roads by my home. Had to do a triple take as it went by but was no mistaking that hood scoop and that distinct V10 rumble. It sounds like some of the SRT people had a boring day and wanted to track the car a bit for something to do.

My god that thing is beautiful.

Building this car is essential to compete with the Z28 and GT500. Chrysler said they were gonna "drop the gloves and compete"

So this is a good start...plus the muscle car wars get more ink than most everything else. To be in the lead is very good PR.

Instant collectible. They could build 500 of these today and sell them out before Monday. Not sure how much money they'd make off it but they'd sure get a ton of good press... and that's something Chrysler needs just as much if not more than money these days.

I would rather DODGE went out on a limb and at least built a "lightweight" version of the CHALLENGER. You know a Research Vehicle to see where they can take the step of this platform. Same general size but much lighter. At least, 500lbs lighter. The CHALLENGER stands taller but is actually not as big as a CAMARO. Yes, bigger than a MUSTANG, but it is still the heaviest car by a wide margin.

Lighter. Not merely more powerful. Size to contain that power is crucial but massive weight is not.

I was stunned to learn that the LX has its evolutionary roots going way back the AMC/RENAULT EAGLE PREMIER (American-French) and DODGE MONACO. Suspension hardware on the LX is of course German and engines are all-American. That all just means that the base architecture needs to be pushed in another direction or replaced.

The SRT8 is anything but common, unless you're a professional liar, or stretch the meaning of the word common. A camry is common.

For cost the thing makes zero sense especially given the 392 has been essentially confirmed. At 475-500hp they will be fine with that versus producing a 70 thousand dollar challenger numbering in the hundreds.

As neat as it would be, no way.

I would like to see a special edition run for srt10 challengers, not sure how many would be a good number only a hundred or so.

I Am more interested in seeing the new 6.4L v8 for it and the power numbers that come with it. hopefully they can and will give the 5.7L a bump up with the new 6.4 at leas the 390hp in the Ram but hopefully 400hp. that and the 3.6L pentestar with DI with around 320hp and a 6 speed.

Perhaps I was wrong bitching about heft. With all the torque and power Challenger will need extra weight to stay grounded. I wonder if that scoop is functional or "adore my penis" sign?

Get it done Dodge. As long as it's not over priced because of dropping the V10 in it, I think it would sell very well. And definitely put the Challenger back in the game with the GT500 and the Z28 when that comes out next year.

The SRT-8 version is actually a really common car to see, and this V10 has the power to move it's high curb-weight (although I'd assume horsepower around 550ish is more likely for a non-Viper V10). This could do well if priced right.

Would it kill them, now 3 model years out, to come up with a Challenger specific 3 spoke sport steering wheel to make that interior somewhat distinguishable from the 300 donor car.

Well it would defintiely put the Challenger right there in the thick of it if they do. 600Hp is hard to argue with lol
