It's available with two-wheel or four-wheel drive. It's available in various trims, from base ST to loaded Sport and Laramie models. It's available with two capable engines, a V6 and V8. It's available with three transmissions. And it's available as a two-door extended cab or four-door crew cab. (Due to lack of interest from customers, a regular cab model was dropped when the Dakota was redesigned in 2005.)

Since the complete 2005 redesign, the Dakota was freshened in 2007, including a modern new front fascia.

The Dakota features a rugged conventional body-on-frame truck design.

The V6 motor displaces 3.7 liters and generates 210 horsepower and 235 pound-feet of torque. It features electronic throttle control for positive throttle response and exhaust gas recirculation to help lower emissions.

The 4.7-liter V8 is a class exclusive. It pumps out 302 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque. It is flex-fuel E85 capable, which means it can run on ethanol when properly equipped.

The V6 can be mated to either a standard six-speed manual or optional four-speed automatic transmission. A five-speed automatic is available with the V8 engine.

The four-wheel-drive system is of the part-time variety, with part-time 4LOCK and 4LO modes and an available four-position full-time transfer case. The latter includes the added convenience of an all-wheel-drive mode for full-time four-wheel traction.

An available TRX4 off-road package adds an anti-spin differential, upgraded 3.92 axle ratio, TRX4 decals, special 16-inch alloy wheels, rugged trail tires and more.

When properly equipped, the Dakota boasts best-in-class towing of up to 7,050 pounds.

Available comfort and convenience amenities put some cars to shame. The Dakota is available with leather seats, a six-way power driver's seat, air conditioning, cruise control, storage pockets galore, security system, power locks, power windows and more.
