The Dodge Demon first showed its aggressive and stylish lines with Cerberus in control of Chrysler, and the company planning a complete turnaround of the under-performing brand. While the transformation was to include extensive cost cutting and heavier scrutiny for upcoming models, such as the scrapping of the Imperial sedan, there was then hope for new and exciting models to enter production. The Dodge Demon is intended to deliver cutting-edge style, performance and value for those looking for Boxster-like looks and performance at a fraction of the cost.
Chrysler first exhibited the Dodge roadster concept, called the Demon, at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2008. The vehicle was originally designed to compete with the popular Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky, as well as the Mazda MX-5. Now, with both Pontiac and Saturn out of the picture, the Demon is poised to compete with an even shorter list of competitors should it re-enter the production picture.
Power comes from a 172 horsepower 2.4 liter engine, offering peak torque of 165 pound-feet. A six-speed manual sends power to the rear wheels in the concept version, but Leftlane reported that the production version would likely come as a front-wheel drive car. Weight is estimated at 2,600 pounds. Dodge officials say an SRT version could also be offered with a 300 horsepower four-cylinder from the Dodge Caliber SRT-4.
The Dodge Demon has for now fallen victim to a continuously struggling Chrysler and changes in ownership. Cerebus’ attempted resurrection of the Chrysler brand failed, and after a multi-billion dollar government bailout Chrysler was left part-owned by the United Auto Workers union, part-owned by the U.S. Government and part-owned by Fiat. This changing of hands and constant interruptions of product development and funding has landed the Demon concept car in obscurity – with no details coming out of Chrysler about the future of this highly anticipated concept car.
In a 2008 interview with Wards Auto, Chrysler’s Design Chief Trevor Creed said that the Demon is at the top of his agenda and that conditions are ideal for the car to get a green light. Chrysler has yet to release official plans to make the Demon, but it sounds as the car is on the right track to make production.
“While the iconic Dodge Viper is a dream car for many, the Dodge Demon is designed to be an attainable dream car,” said Jae Chung – Dodge Demon Principal Exterior Designer, Chrysler Group. “The exterior design is simple yet bold, featuring an energetic combination of curves and intersecting planes.”

I totally agree, its like they had a huge lottery ball machine with a design idea in each one, and whatever 7 numbers came up they were going to go with.
it feels like they are drawing design cues from BMW(side profile) porsche (overall shape), aston martin (tail lights modified)land Nissan (rear section), also a hint of shelby cobra in there….and then they went and dodgicized it, by making it look cheap and shabby.
There is really only two good things about this car
1. The name. Demon for a car? thats bad ass.
2. potential SRT 300 hp version. if they get the suspension right (which they wont) could be a contender against BMW M roadster.
Every time i look at at dodge, i always find that all the swoops and arches and scoops…all seem very fake.

Well I guess if Honda is going to discontinue the S2000 and replace it with a 2+2 FWD POS, then DCX might as well copy a great car and add a more powerfull engine. I’m not a roadster guy because they’re so impractical, I wish they would make a coupe version. Wasn’t the Razor a coupe concept? How many roadsters can they sell anyway? A coupe counterpart would fill a niche for a small affordable RWD sports car and would make DCX more money. All of the other so-called sports-cars in this segment are FWD poser vehicles and a coupe version of this thing with 300hp could eat their lunches. I would consider one and I don’t even really like domestic sports cars. The front end styling could use a little tweaking but with 300hp and RWD I can overlook the goofy truck grille. Now just give me a coupe/hatchback not some pansy hardtop convertible.

The rear’s quite lambo-ish, the body’s somewhat reminicent of the 350z, some air-intakes could be liftet from a Jaguar XK, frontlights from -yes- the s2000, you spot some details around the taillights deriving from the AUDI TT, the rims come from the Ford GT…Not groundbreaking not even fresh.
No, I’m sorry but I don’t get it. There’s nothing surprising, innovative or fresh about it. Why produce a remix of old cars and try and pump it up as being “new”?

How close can you get to someone else’s design without infringing copyright? In every angle you can see another car or concept, and the only one that makes me think of Dodge is the front grille from one of their trucks. The front headlights were the part that I spotted first, so close to the S2000 it’s uncanny. Renault’s Wind concept can be recognised as a major influence from most angles, there’s 350Z in there, the interior takes cues from the Z8, the details and wheels remind me of a Ford Focus ST and the rear lights are reminiscent of concepts from Ford and the new AMV8, especially from dead astern. Does anybody remember the Zagato Hyena; this car’s stance is very similar.
It definitely grabs the attention, but its so disjointed and so heavily and widely influenced that it feels like a pastiche. The car is pictured in front of a bunch of sketches and the designers are shown with the car because the marketing department felt the need to take ownership of the design. Whenever marketers feel the need to make an association with a product, its because the general perception is otherwise.
It used to be developing manufacturers that copied the big names, but it is becoming a US phenomenon. First the Caprice Royale and now this.

I don’t see them selling more than 5,000 to 10,000 per year of these, at most. If they can make money on this car at such low volume levels, I say go for it, but I doubt they can.

For it’s, hopefully, target price range the market is largely untapped. The TT, BMW Z-series, and the 350Z all start pretty much where the Kappa cars and MX-5 Miata end, that is over 25K USD. Buying second hand doesn’t count.

zigzagz94 and asiminator,
You guys are right on…
I feel that while this is a strong “concept”, why do we have to over-saturate the roadster market? Yes, at 2600 pounds with 300 RWD horsepower, someone at dodge is finally seeing the light. You might be able to steal some sales from GM, and mazda, but do we really have that many roadster buyers? Dodge, why don’t you “grab life by the horns” and make a 2+2 RWD COUPE with 300 hp at 2600 lbs… That would be a new market and you guys could freakin take over. Every other maker would be clamoring to make a car to catch up to you. Straight middle class men need a sports car they can be proud of. In case you haven’t noticed, straight middle class men are hesitant about little convertibles…
What happen to the Razor? That was an amazing, ORIGINAL, little concept, and it was a coupe… You guys were on the right track… If it were up to me, I’d start to combine these two cars… Make the Razor, with back seats, add the rear fenders and headlights and taillights from the Demon and call it a day…
That said, I’ll critique what we have so far… I agree with asiminator, that the side crease going down to the vent is not cool. It should go up… So get rid of the crease, make it angle slightly upwards, and drop that fussy little vent while you’re at it too. The vent looks like an afterthought… Probably some design director at the last minute, told the designers, “we need a vent, THEY TOLD US WE NEED VENTS, yeah and make it silver, it’ll be *Different*” Anyway, Just smooth some things out… Make it look a little more cohesive. The side profile toward the front looks A LOT like the S2000, even the placement of the Demon badge is in the same exact place… At least put the badge somewhere else so it doesn’t look like your designers were looking at the S2000 too much while designing it… I love the rear and the tailights. I love the headlights, and the front looks pretty good. But the wheel wells… THE WHEEL WELLS, just make them ROUND. You guys are trying TOO hard. Wheel wells are round because WHEELS are ROUND… Why would you want to create awkward wheel well gaps? It’s like fitting a cirlce in a square, it doesn’t work, unless it’s FORCED. You want the design of the wheel wells to mimic the wheels, so they are ROUND… Get it? I’ll tell you what, just hire me, and I’ll fix all your problems…

The comments about what this car looks like is pretty ridiculous. Saying that you can see 7 different cars in this doesn’t make it a copy. Just face it – this is a fresh and unique design. So do you think that the designers actually went ahead and LOOKED at other cars before designing theirs?

I have to say I like it. It looks mean. Normally I would agree that the grill belongs on a truck, but in this case they didn’t let the grill dictate the shape of the rest of the nose (as much as other dodges). It’s kind of trapezoid shaped and gives it that darth vader feel like the Neon SRT-4 had. and the name? To be more comfortable saying “miata” than “demon” is like being more comfortable saying “rubber ducky” than ….[insert predatory animal name]. I know it’s reviving an old name, but it’s a name that has some balls to it, like the viper.
It’s certainly not without it’s flaws though. I think the grill should be a little lower, and I agree that the rear vents look like too much of an afterthought, especially painted silver. To say that it borrows too much from this or that car is like saying having a round steering wheel is unoriginal.
I can see where some might think it looks like a 350z roadster, but when the 350z coupe came out, a lot of people thought that it copied too much from Audi’s styling at the time (especially the TT). Style is an evolution that is not always brand exclusive.
Those who think it won’t sell because the market is flooded, I beg to disagree. If an SRT version comes out and has the 2.4 Turbo world engine (a la Caliber SRT) and has 300 hp, people would flock to it. It would be filling a market VOID left by the Camaro and Firebird and would most likely smoke a Mustang GT since they are about 600-700 lbs heavier.
Overall Big thumbs up. I hope it does well.

TOO MANY disparate and unharmonious influences here, it screams Crossfire/Z4/Miata/350Z/Boxster, and in all the wrong ways. If they smoothed out the odd rear fender shape and that frightful sloped bodyside crease it may have a chance to be a “mini-Viper”, but I much prefer the Razor concept of a few years back.

In comparing this to a Z4 … this car makes the Z4 look like **** … far more balanced (the bulbous front end on the Z4 is a joke). And the Z4’s drooping eyes and downward sloping curve meeting the door handle both look much worse than what we see here.
This car looks aggressive, tight, purposeful … far more masculine than the S2000, Z4, Solstice, Sky or Miata.
Granted the interior is plain and simple, it’s leaps ahead of the Solstice and Sky.
Crosshair grill, love it, signature Dodge … better than BMW’s double kidney grill, better than Saturn’s emasculated grill, better than Mazda’s fish mouth opening.
Now, I’m not saying it’s the perfect car … work on the spartan dash, round out the wheel wells, put on some nicer rims and I’d consider getting one if I got a five year warranty.

There was a huge pileup on a California freeway recently. In the accident, an S2000 was rear-ended by a 350Z Roadster. The connected mass then hit a wall, and was run into by a Freightliner truck.
A passing design team from Dodge saw the result, and all agreed that it was their next hit car.
It’s terrible and I hate it. I can’t wait to see this week’s Top Gear, I’m sure Jezza will have some choice words to describe this abortion.

The thing I liked about the razor was even though it was a 2 seater, it still had a full coupe shape… it didn’t look like a roof was stuck on top of a convertible…
I think they should make a full coupe body out of this, round the wheel wells, clean it up and they’d have a definate winner… 300hp and 2600 pounds is a great combination…

dmanero – I understand what you’re saying, but I disagree. Why follow the pack? Being unique is what makes you different. You’re right, nobody else has roaring V8 engines in their sportscars, and that’s fine! America was raised on these engines, why change a thing when, at least in GM’s case, they’re keeping these engines right up with current technology?
I just don’t understand why someone will buy a BMW or Mercedes with 10-12 cylinders that makes just as much power as the 8 cylinder Corvette, Z06, or upcoming StingRay.

Unfortunately, without taking chances that push the envelope, progress can not be made. Few ever get it completely right the first time. When looking for something new, results can be… unpleasant. The BMW 7-series is a good example. Awkward and funky, it was an enigma as to how it made it off the drawing board. But subsequent iterations in the 5 and 3 series have yielded better results.
DCX has been on this course for a while. The 300 was so far in left field that I still don’t much like it, especially since it’s EVERYWHERE now. Dodge is leaning toward the Charger more than the Viper these days for design influence and it is starting to work. But I do agree that the Viper should have had more of an influence on the Demon concept than the Firepower and the ME412. As it is the Demon makes a better Chrysler than a Dodge. Chrysler had some really sweet designs going, before they were effectively taken by Daimler-Benz. This “Demon” is yet another step on that awkward and funky path.
I actually love the front end, but more thought into original or, at least, better adapted design elements in the rear half of the car should have been taken. Complaints that this car looks hastily cobbled together is starting to sink in with me, but I still like this car.
The name also is a mistake. “Demon” does not belong on this car. Most will not know what kind of car the original Demon was so that is not an issue. But the name alone does not fit this small, slick, speeder. Again I stand by “Copperhead”… Maybe even “Venom”…

Yeah, save the Demon name plate for a bigger 4-seat “muscle” car. A cheap RWD car, something to slot below Challenger, and above this thing. Something with a 4.7l and 6-speed. I like Venom for this car, not a bad name. Kinda reminds me of the baddies in GI joe.

Is does look like it is using the MB SLK base (which would make sense cost wise and follow the platform sharing concept. Both the interior and the metal folding roof points to this. If this really is the case, then a V6 can be crammed in there easy since it is already in the SLK.

For those who may not have known, The Dodge Copperhead was a Concept car by Dodge back int 1998 meant to be a “cheap” Viper. It had a 3.5L V6 RWD and was presented as a Roadster. It was also almost the same color as the Demon, but looked a bit like a baby Viper… or a Panoz Esperante. They should have built that one the more I think of it.
The Dodge Venom was a RWD concept going back to 1994. It had a V6 but also looked very producible, and given that the Viper had come out not long before, Many thought it would make it. Built with Pt Prowler drive components, even I thought it was a no-brainer. This car easily could and can be the basis for Dodge and Chrysler mid-sized cars.
Oh well… Maybe it isn’t too late.

LOL! Dodge had a perfect 2 seater ready to go at about the same time the Solstice was on the drawing board it was called the Razor. But they chose to throw that away and roll this piece of crap out! Few years ago when the Razor was on tour I asked a Dodge rep if the car was ever going into production. He said he didn’t know but everyone loved the car. Hmmm so what happened?? Few things I don’t like about this car… those stupid slanted headlight, the dull as dishwater interior and that god awful rear end.

I love this car! The body has hints of every car i have ever wanted. If they keep the baseline price in the 15k ball park these things will be more popular than the Ford Mustang. Makes me wonder about the price tag on a SRT version. Those looks and 300hp turbo charged 4 cyclinder, whats not to love. Surely this car will make it in to production, and when they hit my local dealership I will be there!

I like this car but I hate to say it, if Chrysler/Dodge wanted to get in the small convertible game they should have jumped in there with the Pronto Spyder or Copperhead. But I forgot that’s when the folks at Plymouth were still around Sorry. Daimler-Benz just parted out who they didn’t need anymore, Chrysler.

Build it, and learn from GM’s mistakes. The Solstice is a good looking car but lacks the Miata’s maneuverabilty and is cursed with an unlivable interior. If it comes to market Dodge should know it will be compared against the Miata and Solstice (and maybe the Mustang and Eclipse convertibles), so be prepared to take #1.

Cerebrus may not be so clueless after all.. if Daimler’s big Achilles’ heel with Chrysler was meeting the upcoming CAFE standards with the bulk of their lineup selling only with gas-hogging HEMI motors, it makes total sense to scrap the similarly motored Imperial and instead finding another way to sell the Caliber platform and more 4-cylinders with the Demon! With a little design consolidation and a folding top that actually fits the body, this could take lots of Solstice/Sky sales.

Well, it’s definitely NOT the same car as the ’70s production vehicle that wore the same namesake (like this one: http://www.hubcapcafe.com/ocs/pages01/dodg7101.htm ), but I think it may be a step in the right direction, and I think it’s time that Chrysler explores a new genre that they’ve not tapped into.
Maybe Cerebrus can turn Chrysler around and undo the damage Daimler-Benz did to the brand after the merger back in ‘99-’00

Car companies need volumes at least 100k to make a profit on a vehicle. Since this vehicle is a roadster and a two seater, it better have a powerful thrifty motor, or its doomed. Getting that volume in a crowded 2 seater market (low volume), is a hard business plan. It will make it if it has underpinnings of other 4 banger Chrysler models…currently yuk! Interesting top picture of the hood…looks like xxxx and balls…marketing to the females again!
