Our spy photographers caught the first glimpses of Dodge’s upcoming Durango late last year, but a leaky United States patent office appears to have fully outed the next-gen CUV. The last generation Durango ended production in late 2008, but a replacement Dodge SUV should bow by mid-2011.
Code-named “WD,” the Durango will be sharing a unibody chassis with the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee and the 2011 Mercedes ML-Class. Not all things will be equal as we expect the Benz to sport higher-end running gear than its Chrysler brothers. Fiat may also launch a vehicle on this chassis sometime in 2012-2013. One thing you won’t see on this chassis is a Chrysler Aspen variant.
While the Durango nameplate has been in use since 1998, that may change with this newest iteration. During Chrysler’s marathon presentation of their 5-year plan in November, the word “Durango” was never spoken. In the PowerPoint presentation, it was referred to simply as “Full-size CUV.” Rumors have suggested the next-gen Durango could be renamed the Magnum – a name last used on a low-slung sports wagon.
Whatever the name, the new CUV/SUV will follow Dodge’s current design language. Thanks to the leaked sketches — which appeared on Carscoop – we can clearly see Dodge’s signature cross-hair grille will be front and center.
Powertrains for the Dodge should be identical to the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, with the next-gen, Pentastar 280 horsepower 3.6-liter V6 and the 390 hp 5.7-liter Hemi V8 on tap. A Fiat-sourced diesel motor, as well as a dual clutch transmission, may eventually find its way into the Dodge. Other features we expect to see are optional 3rd row seating, power lift gate, adaptive cruise control and parking sensors.
Based on a leaked production list we expect this new Dodge CUV to start production on November 8, 2010 at the Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit, Michigan.

The last Durango was way too big compared to the original. They ought to downsize it a bit. I don’t understand what’s wrong with a rugged midsized SUV, everything has to be a unibody 8 passenger behemoth now. As if everyone runs a daycare or something.

hmm
Isn’t Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep doing the EXACT same thing that got them in the position they are in today? Rebadging? Looks a lot like a Cherokee with a cross grille if you ask me… if its going to be based on the Cherokee at least make it look different please!
And even though Magnum is a powerful name IMO, I’d still prefer Durango to keep from having confusion.

Genesis101 – What got Chrysler into the position they are in today was the merger with Mercedes Benz. That merger is when all the interior designs went to crap. I had a 2003 PT Cruiser and that car was reliable, comfortable and had a nice interior. I look at the new ones that were redesigned and the interior looks like garbage compared to the 03 I had.

I have one problem with Mr. Marchionne, and that is his insistence not to reveal new product until it is very close to production ready. That may be a really odd thing to say given how much flak the likes of GM gets for doing just the opposite, but Chrysler of all companies needs to have the anticipation factor working in their favor right now. So how about some real teasers Sergio?

Looks good. There are tons of Chargers here in Florida with this design “language”. This looks like it may lend some conistency to their design. I would have bought one of these in 2005 had they built it a little wider. Not for the common reason. The B-pillars were too narrow in the shoulders for me. Hopefully they make this one a little wider then the last model.
Now, will it be a Dodge or a Ram? What does the new Dodge logo look like?

Looks like a “Ram” Durango to me, I think they will change the grill to be more “Dodge-like” before it gets produced if they still want it to be a Dodge. From the looks of it, though, it maybe a Ram-branded SUV.
Looks good though – I like it. No other big 3 will have a real midsize RWD based SUV with Ford’s next FWD Explorer and GM’s FWD triplets.

ajm11 – THANK YOU! I’ve been saying that since the redesign in 2005 that they ruined the nice interior it did have which was all soft touch materials and higher grade plastics. Of course that was designed pre -Daimler too.

The side profile reminds me of the new 4-Runner. I thought Chrysler was done with sharing parts from mercedes!? Why would you want a chassis designed to be used on a small suv to be used on a larger durango?

It is an OK two box design, but do they need it? Will it sell? Will it compete with Jeep?

idrinorbarsaku, I actually see a Range Rover Sport in the profile, which can’t be a bad thing. The front end looks like what the Nitro should have looked like, and the back is going to suck, because I have yet to see a unibody SUV that doesn’t have an oddly proportioned rump. Rather than looking like a proper body-on-frame with the rear, all these unibodies have a very minivan-esque/bloated wagon style from the C-pillars back.

Idrinorbarsaku – While they may be done part sharing with Mercedes, you just don’t toss out years of work along with money spent designing a new chassis only to not use it.

What’s the strategy against the Journey here? Won’t they cannibalize each other? I never understood why Chrysler threw so many similar products — Commander, Nitro, Durango, Cherokee, etc. — at the same narrow market niche.

Intellectual property 101: Patent submissions are public information.
Say, somebody stole your idea, or are infringing on a secrecy agreement and try to submit an invalid patent application.
Another party must have the ability to challenge an application before a patent is granted, so the information is made available for all to see.
Chrysler has competent lawyers and knows exactly what they are doing, more so than the author.

Looks promising at lest much better than the last durango. When It is eventually released it is going to come down to price, features for buyers depending on whether they want this or the Jeep Cherokee or one of its other competitors and mpg and for some capability.
One other thing that I noticed and something that someone else at least partly brought up is that I am pretty sure that if these are legit photographs the logo shown on this vehicle as new vehicles come out are going to be exclusively on Ram Brand vehicles. With New Dodge vehicles that as they are released will receive the new Dodge logo. Thus this will not specifically be a Dodge Durango but rather a Ram Durango.
Which would make sense with how the front end of this vehicle is as it looks close to the same as the Ram. Along with how the rest of the vehicle looks.

seriously with the suv’s? dodge needs to bring in a new car design with a 4 cylinder engine thats not a hatch. Don’t bring the sx 2.0 or neon back but really people want a vehicle with a dodge sticker, low price tag, and good mpg. Leave the suv’s to jeep cause they do a damn good job, PT never looked good to me but thats my opinion but leave luxury to chrysler and let dodge build rams and muscle cars and the caravan i guess.
