Dodge to launch hybrid version of Ram pickup

02/11/2009, 3:31 PM

By Drew Johnson

Chrysler’s hybrid lineup has been conspicuously sparse –consisting of only the now-dead Dodge Durango Hybrid and Chrysler Aspen Hybrid — but the Michigan-based automaker will soon revive its two-mode hybrid system in another truck-based model.

Earlier on Wednesday at the Chicago Auto Show Chrysler announced that its light-duty Dodge Ram pickup truck will soon be available with a two-mode hybrid system. Chrysler failed to give any more details on the hybrid truck – instead focusing on its Heavy Duty Ram lineup – but it is assumed the truck will combine Chrysler’s two-mode hybrid system with a 5.7L HEMI V8.

Under the hood of the Dodge Durango Hybrid, the two-mode hybrid system – which was co-developed with General Motors and BMW — managed EPA fuel economy ratings of 20 mpg city and 22 mpg highway. We expect to see similar figures for the Ram Hybrid.

Chrysler didn’t mention a release date for the hybrid truck, which leads us to believe that it could be a while before it shows up in Dodge dealerships. Look for the Ram Hybrid to hit the market in late 2009 at the earliest, with a 2010 launch date more likely.

Chrysler only managed to sell 81 examples of its hybrid SUVs, so hopefully the Michigan automaker will have better luck with its Ram Hybrid.

A full electric drive would be better. Use a Generator instead of batteries. Costs less and is more practical for the foreseeable future.

But seriously Is this wishful thinking or does CHRYSLER have something up their sleeves we do not know about?

First it is the 200C, which I would love to see and maybe buy.

Then their EVs… HYBRIDS (They need to fire their PR department or whoever gets to name these things.

Now a hybrid truck… only a few years behind GM.

Throw in a reskin of the CHARGER so it looks more like a CHARGER and promise to kill everything except the core products (the 300, CHARGER, CHALENGER, VIPER, RAM, JEEP WRANGLER and GRAND CHEROKEE and the minivans), and I’ll be stymied.

Also, don’t be afraid to just go upmarket. Premium interiors and features for DODGE and some Jeeps (Leather in a Wrangler isn’t really all that practical), and high drawer luxury and features for CHRYSLER. Forget being down with the GM and FORD, heck even FORD is aiming much higher these days…

Okay, daydreaming aside, when can I attend the wake?

I’ll see it when I believe it. Look at the Durango hybrid, such a big deal that Chrysler was making…how many years has it been since we’ve been hearing about a Durango hybrid? And when it FINALLY came to market, it lasted only what two months? It takes Toyota to be the first to make hybrids, (wait for their Tundra hybrid), and then let GM, Ford, Chrysler follow.

What the hell even happened with the Durango and Aspen hybrids? I never knew they were out, nevermind dead. Nor did I see a single advertisement for it, unlike the badgering we all took with the Tahoe and Escalade hybrids. 81 people bought them and im sure only 50 of them knew about it. The other 31 went “holy crap theres a hybrid?? ill take that then.”

since its on a huge truck platform, why not make it fully electric and run a generator to charge the batteries/give it electrical power. I’m kinda surprised this hasn’t really been done yet.

I didn’t test drive the one and only Aspen Hybrid they had at my local Chrysler store because it was already sold but, damn, it was a nice rig. I think hybrid 1/2 tons are a great idea for anyone who maybe tows infrequently while the rest of the time using their rig as a commuter coffin. As for the manufacturers, CAFE standards aren’t going to get any easier so it shouldn’t come as a big surprise when we see everyone trying to flog something similar. That should be good for consumers as the price can only come down which is probably why GM’s haven’t caught on perhaps as much as they’d like.

HYBRID=Gas Saver HEMI=Gas Guzzler. How does this work out? So insted of getting 14-16 you’ll get 17-18.

I really like the new Dodge Ram… a hybrid version is a waste though. People that buy trucks are generally prepared for poor economy. The truth is probably that if the automakers didn’t have to try to please the government and special interest groups with useless products like this, they would probably really be able to churn out some mind blowing vehicles. The fact that they only sold 81 hybrid Durangos tells me there is no market. Hybrid powertrains belong in small cars. I have said it before, highly efficient diesel engines are the best way to wring fuel economy and power out of light trucks.

I can’t see Dodge doing anything, the 5 guys left in the truck office have more than enough to do finishing everything that was left by the 60 guys that were kicked out before christmas.

Like anything, it’s a stepping-stone for the technology. Because there’s, MY GOD!, a hybrid pickup, doesn’t mean that it’s the be-all, end-all for this truck, or the technology. Dodge is figuring out ways to keep up with, or better, the other manufacturers by experiementing, which is a good thing. If nobody took a risk we’d ALL be friggin’ riding horses. Lighten up folks, the world isn’t ending because Dodge, or anyone for that matter, puts a hybrid system in their vehicle. Don’t buy the hybrid version; problem solved. (waiting for, “nobody WILL buy the hybrid system gundy, same as the durango / aspen version)..

Just think of the sales Chrysler / Dodge would rack up (he said “rack”..) if they could wring 30 mpg out of that truck. Maybe they would be buying Fiat instead of the other way around (sort of)

an electric motor could possibly be more advantageous towards hauling anyway. An electric motor pretty much has instant torque as soon as a current is applied. Im surprised stuff like this wasn’t though up awhile ago.
