Chrysler’s SRT division will unveil an all-new version of the Viper in a few weeks at the New York auto show, but the last-generation of the super snake just proved it’s not exactly outdated.

The most potent form of the last-generation Viper – the track-only ACR-X – recently lapped the Nurburgring’s “Green Hell” in just 7:03.058. Not only is that 9-seconds faster than the road-going Viper ACR, but also an official lap record for a factory-produced race car, according to DriveSRT.

Designed for the SRT Viper Cup racing series, the ACR-X is largely based on the ACR, but sports a few key changes. In addition to a 650 horsepower V10, the ACR-X also features a race-ready exhaust system, racing-spec fuel cell, factory-fitted roll cage and a race seat.

We expect the SRT Viper’s performance to be much improved over the last iteration of the car, so it might not be long until we see a sub-7-minute lap next to the Viper’s name.
