Following an earlier announcement, Dodge has officially begun production of its track-slaying Viper SRT10 ACR-X as the company’s Conner Avenue Assembly Plant. Designed to compete in the newly minted Viper Cup spec series, the ACR-X is reserved for track use only.

Based on the already capable Viper SRT10 ACR – which currently holds the unofficial Nurburgring lap time record for a production vehicle – Dodge engineers further increased the Viper’s performance potential, cutting weight by 160 pounds and boosting power by 40 to 640 horsepower. Most of the ACR-X’s added power was gained through new headers and a revised exhaust system.

As a result of the improvements, the Viper ACR-X is capable of lapping Laguna Seca Raceway nearly 3 seconds faster than the normal Viper ACR, according to Dodge. “The Dodge Viper ACR-X takes the performance attributes of Viper to an even higher level for a wide range of drivers starting with the grassroots racer all the way up to the professional,” said Ralph Gilles, President and CEO, Dodge Brand. “This project is a result of many years of performance engineering expertise from our SRT team, combined with the passion and dedication of Viper Nation, to keep the Viper racing tradition going strong on tracks around the country and the world.”

Other race improvements include a better aerodynamics package and the addition of a racing-spec roll cage, fuel cell and race seats.

Just 25 examples of the Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR-X are planned for production, with the cup series set to kick off in July 2010.
