“Drivers Wanted” no more?

04/18/2006, 10:28 AM

Volkswagen’s “Drivers Wanted” tagline is likely dead, says David Kiley of Business Week. “You can pretty much take this to the bank,” he says. “The new GTI work from new ad agency Crispin Porter +Bogusky, Miami didn’t carry it. And neither does the new Jetta ad campaign. And when pressed at last week’s New York Auto show, insiders said there’s no intention of using the line in any ads this year.” Volkswagen is instead opting for campaigns such as Unpimp My Ride and the GTI Fast.

It might be worth noting that VW changed ad agencies before this change of slogan. Just around the beginning of 2006, VW changed from Arnold in New York, to CPB in Miami.
Apparently VW was looking for a big change in it’s advertising, not just a change in slogan.
With all the attention the GTI ads are getting, it seems like they’re getting their money’s worth with the switch.

I hate ads that play on people’s fears. Even if it plays on one of VW’s strenghts, it’s a strength that’s not rare at all. VW is more unique in other ways.

Funny thing about the Unpimp ads… in Europe, Golfs are among the most commonly aesthetically modified cars.

But, no! That’s like BMW dropping “Ultimate Driving Machine” or Porsche dropping “There is no substitute.”

VW’s tagline used to be “If only everything were as reliable as a Volkswagen.”

Therefore, I propose that their new tagline should incorporate this old one, in a retro touch:
“If only everything were are reliable as a Volkswagen, you’d never get on a plane again.”

“Drivers wanted” was pretty lame. Glad they came up with something more interesting.

Hey Chris, VW’s mainstay is “The World’s Most Loved Cars”, not “Drivers Wanted”.
