Honda has completely redesigned its popular Accord sedan and coupe for 2008, and Leftlane was lucky enough to snag the keys to a LX four-cylinder sedan for some drive time. While our test car wasn’t top-of-the-line, it did give us a good overall impression of the car and represents what Honda expects to make up about 70% of Accord sales.
Compared to the previous-generation car, the 2008 Accord is much more styled and has grown in size — now listed by the EPA as a large car. While some die-hard Accord buyers might not be fans of the new styling, we really like it. Honda gave the 2008 Accord a fresh design that should attract younger buyers, rather than sticking with a more conservative design theme that could endanger Honda of becoming too loyal to its older buyers — similar to what happened to several domestic brands over the past few decades.
The front fascia is angular and aggressive, but not too aggressive. The six-sided chrome rimmed grille looks handsome and flows well into the front headlights. An upward-sweeping character line helps connect the front of the rear of the car and gives the Accord the illusion of motion. The rear of the car is reminiscent of the Civic but seems to end abruptly. Standard body-colored side mirrors are a nice touch.
The interior of the 2008 Accord is also all-new and is arguably the new benchmark for the segment. The seats a firm but comfortable and put you in the perfect driving position. Gauges are typical Honda and are large and easy to read. Fit and finish are top notch and the same can be said for the quality of the materials. The high mounted display for radio and HVAC functions is a smart design and helps keep the driver’s eyes on the road, especially when used with the standard steering wheel mounted controls. All controls are easy to use, although the wide center stack does make for a bit of a stretch to reach some functions, such as the temperature control. Honda’s two-tiered dash is a nice design cue that visually breaks up the all black dash. Overall, the Accord’s interior is well executed and its difficult to find any flaws.
Once on the road, we were impressed with the Accord’s performance — especially for a base model. The 177 horsepower 2.4L four-cylinder was extremely responsive — thanks to Honda’s Drive-by-Wire Throttle System — and had acceleration comparable to some smaller V6s. Like most Honda engines, the 2.4L came on strong as it swept through the revs and the five-speed automatic did a good job of keeping the engine in its powerband. Power delivery was smooth and there was enough on tap to easily spin the 16 inch tires. Equally impressive were the Accord’s brakes. While slightly on the grabby side, they brought the Accord down from speed in a hurry. We didn’t spend enough time behind the wheel to fully test the Accord’s chassis and suspension, but the car felt planted and steering was on point — although one section of uneven road did send some chatter through the cockpit.
Overall, the 2008 Accord was very impressive and should be considered one of the top cars in this segment. Prices for the new Accord start at $20,360, with a range-topping EX-L V6 coming in at just over $30,000 with all of the options checked. The 2008 Accord is currently available at Honda dealers nationwide.

Also, I like Honda, but that dash is awful. It’s super tall, and why is the stereo display buried in the dash? It doesn’t flow at all. I really liked the dashboard layout in the latest civic, which makes this one that much worse…

Between the Accord, the Solara, and the Altima coupe, it was a pretty easy decision for me to make. I think that is what LLN is trying to say here about the 4-door Accord…it stands out among its direct competitors.

There is no way that any Honda aspires to look like any Saturn or any GM product for that matter
The Accord from the side angle does resemble a 5 series, whether they meant to do that is the question but it does have a more upscale look.

Ugh. Honda just about copied wholesale the BMW 5-Series in its design of the new Accord. Look at the greenhouse, the side character lines, and the way the taillight stretches back into the rear fender.
It’s bigger, fatter, and it looks like random bits have been stuck to it, rather than carefully styled and integrated to harmoinize with one another.
The last Accord grew on me. This one is awful, in my opinion.
Give me an Aura, an ‘08 Malibu, a Mazda6, Milan, or Legacy. But this Accord is just terrible.
Honda does well with smaller cars. The bigger they go, the further out of their own league they go.

The GM key fob is there because Honda didn’t invite LLN to do jack ****, so GM had to do it for them. The point was to compare it against the Malibu.
As for the Accord, the whole thing is a mixed bag. The front end looks good, the rear looks stupid, and the strake on the side is pointless. Interior, I like the wheel, instrument cluster, and seats. Anyone who complains about GM’s “cheap knobs” better have the same criticism for the honkin’ knobs on that center stack. Terrible looking. And I swear I saw that same shifter in a 97 Accord.

That center stack is W-I-D-E and the controls on the right are canted AWAY from the driver…that’s F-ed. c) the materials look REALLY cheap…look at all the gloss in the pictures. Lots of hard shiny vinyl and plastic there. d) the key is STILL in the steering column, that’s so 70’s it’s not even funny. The Saturn looked like crap and this looks like crap. And as much as I dislike the 5 series, its lines are more harmonious, to use the description of another poster, than this disjointed mess.
‘Ray Sinclair’, as mentioned, you are not an enthusiast. Let me add, you must be old AND you are a pansie. Oh, and the front end of the Accord coupe is also a mess as it is here. So what, you’re not the only one with bad taste.

Honestly Ray, I know style is subjective, but that dash design is not attractive or up to date. The big button-endowed droop in the middle is not quite passe, the colors and lack of contrast are dressing, the general appearance is like 2001 revisited – not in a retro way but more like they simply didn’ bother to update it, and even the general layout and lines are sleepers. Awfully plasticky too – much like the new Camry – and not in a good way.
Plus that mass of buttons in the center may be nice if you are a button lover, but there are more elegant ways of presenting functionality – given that other cars have more elegant dashes.
No doubt you like it, and that is great. I have yet to see a new Accord Coupe on the road (the prior one was atrociously geriatric). The new sedan is so bland it disappears like a pebble of sand on the beach, but the Coupe at least looks better in pics, and I’ve read it drives pretty well.
Oh and 1115 – I most definitely have seen some hot chicks in Auras – much more so than in Accords – and as a proportion that is even a bigger strike on Accords because there are a lot more of them on the road than Auras. Not saying there’s anything wrong with ugly people gravitating toward Hondas – I mean they are human beings too …. like Rosie O’Donnell and the Elephant Man.

Honda and Toyota routinely get a pass on their use of hard plastics. Honda normally makes their hard plastics look and fit good, but the Camry’s use and fit of hard interior plastics is absurd and hideous.
