Drop-top Mercedes SLR due “within six months”

08/10/2006, 7:48 AM

By admin

Back in March, rumors first broke that Mercedes was considering building a convertible version of its $450,000 SLR supercar. The U.K.’s AutoExpress magazine is now reporting that the car is “well on its way” to entering production, and will be officially unveiled “within six months.” That would put the car on target for the Geneva Motor Show in March. The car will take inspiration from the Vision SLR concept, which was first shown ahead of the official SLR coupe launch. AutoExpress says the goal of the SLR convertible is to handle and perform as well as its coupe counterpart. See the original concept after the jump…

Give the current SLR a facelift, changing the front to look exactly like the coupe in the picture and the engine to a 6.3 litre AMG turbo.

i believe this one will surpass the SLR in elegance.

Screw the turbo. Set up the same s/c system with the new AMG motor.

Robb you are easily impressed, I bet you colect shiny bottle caps like Magpies do. Every aspect of this car is over-styled and fussy, how can that be called beautiful? It’s like a whore with too much make-up on

Everyone has their opinion. You can think something is ugly while someone will think it’s the most awesome thing on the planet…
As for me I don’t like the SLR. It’s a cool car but for some reason there’s something about it that I just don’t like. But it is a very cool looking car.

The car is disproportional. Pointed front end, round rear end, too long of a front, too short in the back, looks like Chrysler got their designers involved in this one.

It is much in the way of great beauty and it is even greater than that for many of us. Many times before has it been great beauty but now it truly is.

Sadness must be had for many of us as the costing is truly great and must be so.

Aren’t these the concept pictures of the SLR? I think these were just used to show what it will resemble.

It doesn’t have the little “McLaren” badge on the front fender… just pointing it out for you guys. :)

Definitely should have a steel roof or maybe a carbon fiber one because the Merc SL is so good that it would be foolish if the SLR is inferior.

These pictures are over 2 years old. This IS NOT the SLR Roadster. If you know anything about cars, you’ll know that it’s not the SLR coupe either. None the less, it’s going to be a sexy car but for the money I’l take the Murcialago Roadster or LP640.

I think the removing of the top might help make the slr look less nose-heavy. And yeah, this is the old concept, in case you were wondering why it looks so much better than the production car. This one has its engine only MOSTLY inside the wheelbase rather than completely inside the wheelbase as on the production car.

For what they charge for these things (450k for the Coupe), it should’ve had a retractable hardtop(a la the SL) from the very beginning…

See, the second part is fine. But the first sentence is unneeded, amateurish, and downright immature. Why insult me? A simple, “I disagree” would have been just fine.

Thats a reallly tight droptop, a great adaptation of the SLR. See this convertible builds on the coupe’s lines and looks and develops a unique look for itself, whereas cars like the Bentley Continental GTC don’t give themselves enough of a unique look.
