General Motors has made public a series of images previewing interior design improvements and experimental technologies planned for future vehicles. Some of these will arrive in showrooms this year, while others are still at the conceptual stage.
The first image shows the revamped 2008 Cadillac STS interior. With its latest round of product updates and redesigns, GM has emphasized interior quality. We’ve already seen major changes to the SRX and CTS interiors, and it appears the STS is next in line.
The next image shows a jewelry-inspired Buick key and key fob. Third is a prototype Buick steering wheel brushed steel and leather. GM also previewed a variety of steering wheel designs for other brands. A prototype dash provides iDrive-like GPS navigation and a media player.
Lastly, GM offers a glimpse of a rear-facing camera system that uses an LCD screen mimicking the location and shape of a rearview mirror.

It’s a nice looking interior, but nothing groundbreaking. It seems that most interiors (and exteriors for that matter) are getting pretty homogenous in their design.

Very nice improvements! They are responding well, but never quite quick enough to the market. Unfortunately, by the time they get these out, others will have moved on. Still, it’s a huge improvement and nice to see GM making progess and addressing these issues.

As for GMnumberone4ever. I don’t know why you guys give such a hard time. It’s pure comedy, very tongue-in-cheek. Someone once posted that you have imagine someone like Steven Colbert is saying it. I laugh every time I read his posts.

What gorgeous steering wheels. I wonder if any of them will make production. I like the current Chevy/Pontiac steering wheels, but I really like these ones; very classy looking for the most part, IMO.
Also, that key fob and rearview screen are amazing..

It doesn’t quite feel right to me. Maybe its because so much of the business seems nearly thrown in the drivers lap. The passage side looks utterly empty. A bit more detail on the passenger side or less on the driver side I think would work nicely.
Otherwise it looks great… if a bit unbalanced.

Thought the exact same thing about the key fob, the steering wheels look great IMO. I just hope this stiff actually sees production. I always get my hopes up just have them come crashing down when they don’t make it into the final products.

Wow, what an improvement. I’d love to spend any amount of time in these interiors. Very easy on the eyes. And the key and key fob look awesome! Talk about some style where you’d least expect it. Way to go GM! But I agree, the C7 Vette better have an interior design as good as the ones we’re seeing here.

Just like the 8 speed transmission from Lexus, and the 8 speed tranny BMW is working on? If GM wants to compete with Toyota its not going to be good enough to just match what their doing, they need to one up them. They have their work cut out for them, as they have a lot left to do. So better looking/felling interiors, more gadgets and technology is needed just as much as quality and reliability.

The layout has been getting marginally better but I agree, not quick enough. GM can pay anyone ANY amount of money so I don’t see why they still can’t get interiors right. The quality of the plastics that have always been way below the Germans, and Japanese. Why do they keep using this crap? It’s shiny, hard and has an overall low-rent feel. Not to mention the overly soft seats that completely lose their support in 2-3 years. Same with the switches and instrumentation. My wife had an 04 Envoy and the interior was junk…my 01 Landcruiser is WAY nicer…albeit more basic. That said, these designs look nice, I just hope they use high quality plastics.

I think that the trunaround GM is in the middle of at this point is nothing short of stunning. They have come such a long way, but it should not be forgotten that they still have quite the journey ahead of them. GM is definitely on the right track and if they keep going like this I’m sure they will America’s #1 for a long time. They are not only (as sad as it sounds) rediscovering design but also quality.

The problem is that the key and the fob are two separate pieces. While most automakers have moved onto the 1 piece fob + key, GM seems to still make cars using the same rationale that they used in 1983.

This is a HUGE improvement to the STS interior, a HUGE improvement…but yet it still looks like it lags behind the competition, whereas before it was seriously slaughtered by the competition. I can’t deny it, it’s one of GM’s better interiors, and I’m glad they’re focusing on improving them because interior quality is something I and many others hold in high regard, but like someone else said these changes just come so late.

STS interior = pretty nice
Keyfobs = nice
Steering wheels= just drawings, so can’t judge as materials would have a lot more to do with how nice they are.
Mirror thing = dumb. Can’t we just use a regular mirror anymore? Are we that stupid or careless? What if it breaks? Then you are screwed.

bingo lambo, gm is getting credit when credit is due. there is a long way to go for gm still, now the cadillac line and the mailbu is just a stepping stone. when i sit in a cobalt and it is better than a civic then gm has finally succeded, but to their credit they have started.
when all of the old men at gm are finally retired and it is left to our generation then we can really expect miracles from them, the old men have no vision there, they are acting now only because they are (were)failing to adapt.

Very classy and elegant. It’s about time that the powers that be at GM finally realized that it’s best to let the engineers and designers build the cars and not let the accountants nickel and dime the products to a point of mediocrity.
If GM does decide to buy Chrysler, I hope that they turn their interior design team loose on the entire product line.
