Ford has revealed its new Lincoln MKR Concept at the Detroit auto show. The four-door rear-wheel-drive sedan is powered by a 415 horsepower twin-turbocharged V6. Peak horsepower comes at 5750 rpm, while peak torque of 400 pound-feet arrives at 2000 rpm.
A six-speed automatic with manual shifting sends the power to the rear wheels — good for a zero to 60 times of 5.3 seconds. The MKR runs on E85 ethanol fuel. Overall weight is 4075 lbs, and pricing is expected to be over $50,000, if a production version is made. Gallery after the jump…

Dude, this thing is SICK! Love it!
Of course, Lincoln makes plenty of cool concepts but doesn’t build them. Hope that changes soon.
Not sure how I feel about the grille, it’s like MKZ meets Pontiac. But when some of the greatly exaggerated features are toned down for production, this thing will be off the hook.

I like – Love how the fenders flow right into the headlamps; that’s a sweet cue I’ve seen on the latest Mazda designs (RX-8, CX-7, upcoming next-gen 6) and it compliments the wheel wells nicely. The rear looks aggressive, almost Italian-inspired with the C-Pillars recalling some of the more post-modern styling elements present on the latest Acura models and the new BMW 3-Series coupe. Integrated exhaust is an elegant and uncommon touch; I’ve seen it on one other car on the road and I can’t even remember which one. Though I’ve never been a fan of chrome wheels, I’ve never before today seen a car where they are absolutely required. They just fit in so well – the MKS concept wouldn’t be the same without them. I’d say tweak the grille height down about 3 to 4 inches and you’re all set.
Clearly, the interior would never see the light of day (imagine the glare on the center console with that much glass on the roof) but I’d be overjoyed to see *something like it* in production. I think it’s possible to do it at a reasonable cost, but I digress. The flow of the center console, particularly how it creates a clear distinction, a border between the driver and passenger seats is a notion I’ve seen expressed before but it almost never happens in production. I wish more and more car manufacturers would understand that there is a difference between the driver and the passenger and build accordingly. Chrome lining on the seats is tasteful and different; I know it would be as popular as it is classy. The two-tier design of the dash and center console is what Honda should have done; their execution on the Civic wasn’t bad — and I know these are two completely different targets — but it’s just weird and reeks of trendy Gen-Y comic book stuff. Functional but hard to take it seriously. Part of the reason the Civic’s interior won’t make into future Honda cars even if the exterior does. Lincoln’s design is infinitely more sophisticated and as youthful as it is mature. I’m in love with the ambiance created by the blue hued lights on the doors and the ceiling. Can you imagine the emotion evoked as they fade on and off with the door opening and closing? Such a touch would exude nothing short of luxury outclassing even the best of exotics out there.
.
Superb work, equaled only by the depressing reality behind it: since we’re talking about Ford, that means building something along the lines of this concept makes far too much sense to be done in our lifetime.

In profile, this looks almost exactly like the upcoming CTS, which would be fine if Lincoln planned this to be the next Zephyr/MKZ.. but if this is supposed to be Lincoln’s future flagship, it would need to be toned down a bit and made decidedly more passenger-friendly. I could see a slightly upsized version as a perfectly acceptable LS/Town Car replacement, since the MKZ and upcoming MKS are already aiming at the lower-range CTS market. Of course, there is no way anything even remotely similar will be available for at least 5 years, and judging by Lincoln’s past few concepts the production model would look NOTHING like it.

I like this, even moreso than the upcoming MKS! However, as past history would indicate, Lincoln is notorious for showing us great concept cars with a lot of promise, and then we never see them.
However, the Lincoln brass and FOMOCO cannot afford to “tease” us anymore….. if they get a good buzz out of this concept, they would be smart to do what they need to do to adapt this concept into production. The future of Lincoln, AND FOMOCO is riding on it.
So FOMOCO, don’t just talk “BOLD MOVES”, ACTUALLY MAKE SOME!!!

If they made the grille it about half it’s current height, it would be better proportioned. The rest of the exterior is great, especially the Lincoln-logo moonroof. Best of all, finally a concept car without Altezza taillights!
The interior reminds me of the “future-tastic” designs from the late 60’s and 70’s. Does it come with a quadraphonic stereo? Somewhat out of place in a luxury car, unless it includes a swingin’ minibar in the center console…
As far a letter-soup naming, count me out. ‘Zephyr’ was a perfectly good name until they dropped it for ‘MKZ’. I say ‘MKR’ = ‘Continental’! And while they’re at it, bring back the “Standard of the World” adline. Lincoln needs to get back to its big, ballsy, unabashedly American roots.

The “Standard of the World” adline was for Cadillac, not Lincoln.
Lincoln’s adline was: “Lincoln….What a Luxury Car Should Be….” until those executive know-nothings at Ford lost their direction and assumed that they knew the Lincoln Brand. It’s not too late for Lincoln, although they are in the 11th inning of this particular ballgame, to hit a home run, and with a little tweaking and a name change, the MKR could be the one.
I hope so…

If they do anything, they’ll use “styling cues” from it as a basis for another boring car. I hope Ford has learned a lesson from Chrysler, and even GM, that building production cars that are identical, or nearly identical, to the concept version, is the only was to get people interested in them.
And BTW—is it just me, or does the woodgrain on the interior look suspiciously like Contact paper?

Low slung roof lines and/or high “belt lines” are not the sole domain of DCX. It has been a common theme through out he American 1960s and 1970s. It works on most cars meant to look tough, powerful, speedy, and just cool. MKR (Mark-R I DO NOT care what FOMOCO execs say it should be said), is the third no brainer so far, this year. They only when through with one so far, ditching mini-vans.
If Ford builds this one,it’ll go light-years toward getting Lincoln back to respectability.
As for pushy car dealers. FOMOCO needs to set some basic standards. Maybe some corporately owned dealerships to set and enforce standards for professionalism, car maintenance, customer care.
