Mitsubishi Concept cX

Mitsubishi’s new Concept cX, which has been officially unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show, has front-end styling similar to the Mitsubishi Lancer but is offered with a hatchback body style.

Power for the cX will come from a new Euro 5 compliant high-output, high-efficiency 134 horsepower 1.9L clean diesel engine that features a variable-geometry turbocharger, a diesel oxidation catalyst, and a diesel particulate filter. The CUV will also utilize Mitsubishi’s new twin-clutch transmission, dubbed Clutch SST (Sport Shift Transmission). The interior will use Mitsubishi’s environmentally-friendly Green Plastic–made from bamboo and other plant-based resins–and the rear hatch will use a split tailgate similar to the one found on the Mitsubishi Outlander. The Concept-cX also uses Mitsubishi’s electronically-controlled 4WD system which will deliver power to the ground via the car’s 225/45R19-sized tires.

It looks like something very familiar with a a Mitsu front slapped on it…I just can’t put my hand on what it is exactly.

Commodore… could it be the Suzuki Grand Vitara? That’s what it looks like to me.

You think they’ll get a Funkmaster Flex CX edition?
That would be the bee’s knees.

Meh. It looks like and angry dwarf. The engine/transmission sounds more interesting. On the hatch: will it split like an old station wagon (vertical hatch), or like a cargo van (horizontal doors)?

Why do they bother making the sketches all aerodynamic and then the real car turns out being nothing like that.

UPDATE. North America will never see the 1.8L clean turbo diesel.

If only it were 6 inches lower, and was only a 2-door.

An Evo hatch would be quite nice IMHO…

I love how the drawings never give you any actual clue about the dimensions of the actual vehicles. They’re always so mis-leading.

What is Mitsubishi doing? They need to be making attractive and well made vehicles. This is one of the ugliest cars I have ever seen.

Its the Imperial Shuttle, I used to have one with folding wings – Darth loved his, so it can’t be bad. The rear end looks like an XA with some wide arches.

Carguy and Kenny, part of the reason they do that is to influence the design studio on whether or not they’re going to take the product, and put more effort into it… In other words, they’re trying to make this look like a serious, aggresive hatchback version of the Evo. You’ll notice they do that with sketches from the Toyota Corolla, to the Ford Taurus.

But anyways, I think it looks alright. I do think it looks like, as global lightning put it, an “angry dwarf”, but it’s just to see public response. If they really wished to, they’d take an existing platform, not the Evo, and turn it into a hatchback. Their just curious how the public will react to an aggressive, high powered hatchback as this is such.

I’ll be damned if Mitsu didn’t hit the Mini right on the nose! (Literally!) Seems like it would target the same demographic, and the extra doors are something Mini doesn’t offer. Not sure if anyone would actually buy it though.

If the interior looks anything like the concept then I’d be ready to replace the Lancia Ypsilon that I use in town. I think if you had the black section of the bumper painted body colour it wouldn’t look a whole lot better.

Wow, what a disappointment. When I heard Mitsubishi was developing a hatch companion for the new Lancer sedan, I expected a sleeker, sportier design than this. This design looks like a Scion or Mini reject design proposal. The Lancer sedan proves that Mitsubishi can build a nice looking car. Let’s just hope that this monstrosity remains just a concept or if they do decide to build it, it doesn’t invade our shores here in the United States.

I do think that a sporty five-door hatch vehicle on this platform is a great idea; I just hope this is not that vehicle.

I don’ tlike hatchbacks but they do serve a purpose.

This does have “the front end styling of the Lancer”, but so do all the other recent Mitsubishi concepts.. nowhere does it say this is the hatchback version of the new Lancer, in fact, this is probably an entirely different platform (Colt perhaps?). I’m certain there will be a new Sportback Lancer.. but this ain’t it.
