General Motors CEO Rick Wagoner used his appearance on ABC’s World News Tonight with Charles Gibson to preview the 2008 Pontiac G8. The G8 is a rebadged version of the new Holden VE Commodore.
As originally expected, the G8 appears very similar to the Commodore, only with a Pontiac-style grille. The sneak peek goes against recent rumors that the G8 would get front end styling similar to the popular Solstice roadster. The Automotive News report even indicated the car would get unique styling from the A-pillar forward.
As it turns out, there may be some truth to a Detroit Free Press story that claimed the G8 will first get a Pontiac grille only, and later get unique styling when production is moved to Canada.
A video clip of the sneak peek can be seen can be found on the ABC website.

Damn good job, nice and clean, looks somewhat like a BMW, but that’s exactly the point. GM wants people to say, “That’s a Pontiac?” as it flies by, 6.0L V8 roaring full throttle.
Cars like the Aztek scared people away from Pontiac (and GM for that matter), whereas a car like this G8 will bring people right in, if for no other reason, because it looks fast and sexy like a BMW. Good job GM, I look forward to the second-generation G8 even more once production begins in Oshawa with a completely unique body.

The “G8″ looked better as a Holden, but it doesn’t look too bad here either. It’s also kinda funny how it says “GM’s Woes” at the bottom of the screen when they’re showing a new car. I don’t think this will beat an M3 though, because I really doubt it’ll have the same precise weight balance that all BMWs have. All in all though, if I had to get a Pontiac, the G8 would be it. Otherwise, I think there are better alternatives.

From what little I can see, I do like it. I suspect another popular hit. However, this pontiac is not in the same market as BMW. GM already has a competitor for the M3, and that’s a CTS-V. A Pontiac will not be entering the ring with a Bimmer. There’s much more to a Bimmer than good performance and a highly recognizeable grill. Avalon, Maxima, Five Hundred, Accord (by default), and Charger will be the competition. It might even steal a few sales from the Mustang. but the Charger is the only one out it’s direct competition that has rear drive. That car is simply a fat pig. Success in the future, I see for the G8. Mm hmm.
