Saturn Astra Tuner Concept

10/31/2007, 6:01 PM

By Drew Johnson

Saturn has unveiled its Astra Tuner Concept at SEMA show in Las Vegas. Based on a production Saturn Astra XR three-door, the Tuner Concept could be a glimpse of what an Astra Red Line might look like. While power for the concept still comes from the standard Astra’s 1.8L engine, output has been increased by 20 horsepower — thanks to headers, a cold-air intake and modified throttle body — and totals 160 hp.

Other modifications include a lowered suspension, new front and rear fascias, center mounted exhaust and Recaro seats. The concept also wears several GM Accessories, such as 19 inch wheels and a rear spoiler.

Although GM will be importing all Astras, it seems possible that a version of its 2.0L turbo four-cylinder could finds its way into the engine bay of a sport Astra — most likely using the Red Line moniker. Opel offers a version of the Astra with a 240 horsepower Ecotec and Chevrolet just announced the 2008 Cobalt SS will use a 260 horsepower version of the engine, indicating an Astra Red Line could be in the cards.

I generally like the exterior, but what the hell are those seats?

I think it’s highly probably the Redline will stay equal in terms of powertrain to the Cobalt SS, much like the Ion Redline before it. 160hp wouldn’t cut it in today’s sport compact market.

This looks QUITE a lot like the Astra VXR version thats offered in Europe

@ 240 HP, I could see this being in Mazdaspeed 3 territory. The queston is then, how will it handle?

And those seats look like an early 90s Reese’s Peanut butter cups commercial.

Americans aren’t really that excited about it, but GM is. Have you seen the compact cars GM has made in the last 20 years? This is by far the best one.

The Opel/Vauxhall Astra was the top selling model in Europe in Sept. There must be something somewhat nice about it, wouldn’t you agree?

This car sucks looks at the flat dash. Where is the Nav system? Why are the seats so ugly? Where is the armrest?
GM never learns its lesson

Doesn’t look too bad on the inside though I question the orangeness of the seats. The real master of the flat dash is Chrysler/Dodge.

The seats are SEMA custom ****, they aren’t production. The nav is blatantly there, above the central vents. Try looking and thinking before posting.

That’s one of the better looking hatch’s ive seen in a while… Forget the Civic hatch it’s downright horrible. This looks hot, lose the seats though…

I think 3 doors looks hideous. However, I do like 5 door model, especially with panoramic sunroof. This car with diesel is really nice to drive (even with a small diesel). I hope GM could certify diesel for states, with diesels torque there is no need for extra ponies.

only that sucks is the door frames. Clearly done for cost reasons but looks really cheap when the b pillar isnt blacked out

I usually don’t comment on here much these days, but, first of all, the MSRP is on Saturn’s website(or was in Sept). It should be here, the “normal” version, in Jan 08.
Since I am an older guy… I drive automatics these days(well, auto-manual shifter in my current car).
With automatic…this car is thisclose to 20,000 dollars….MSRP.
Add sunroof, cruise, etc… you’re talking 21K , or more, for 140HP!
No thanks.
Maybe 17-18K, closer to the Scion tC prices…(it has sunroof, cruise, better stereo, 160HP, same MPG, everything)… for about 2K less, to start(and it can be turboed, iirc…)I might consider one…but not 21K MSRP(around there).
So, this would make the Astra more expensive than anything else in it’s class, before adding on extras.
Maybe they should build it in Mexico, or something? Lower the MSRP some.

Take it easy.

LJ you are 100% correct. The only advantage this car has over competition is a nice interior materials. It is also 3-4 year old specimen, but on the bright site somebody bought few thousand Ions. There is one born every minute.
