Beach cars, essentially low-power buggies intended as toys for the rich, famous and sunshine area-dwelling, were nothing new by the time this Subaru 360 was customized in 1971. Still, this quirky car – the one that Malcolm Bricklin used to launch Subaru into North America – might be one of our favorites.
Currently for sale on eBay and Craigslist, the seller states that the car was one of 10 built for Bricklin. It’s unclear just why Bricklin would have commissioned these – although as we can tell by, well, all of his business ventures, he had a sense of humor.
The seller says that this one has a new top, but needs paint and, obviously, it needs engine work (duct tape was not likely a standard feature). Like the Fiat Jolly and Mini Moke, not to mention the Mini Beachcomber concept that debuted earlier this year in Detroit, this little 360 “Island Hopper” doesn’t seem like a driver’s car – but that doesn’t stop us from wanting one for bombing around the Leftlane Beach Estate.
