Eddie Hahm’s SEMA Scion tC

11/06/2008, 1:12 PM

By Drew Johnson

Being the industry’s token ‘youth’ brand, customized Scions are nothing new – especially at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas. But because of Scion’s youth affiliation, the one off-designs are usually completely over the top, with flat screens and five-inch exhausts trumping good taste. But at this year’s SEMA Show, we stumbled across one Scion custom that we actually really liked.

Based on a Scion tC, Eddie Hahm of “Fast Eddie’s Garage” turned the modern two-door into a combination of 1940s fighter plane and retro-inspired rat rod.

To really set off the look, the tC sports a bare metal look, complete with actual rivets. A few splotches of paint, including a fighter plane shark mouth, give the tC a truly retro feel, as do hood louvers, leather hood straps and wire wheels.

Inside the tC is just about as bare as the exterior, with metal shell seats, an old-school steering wheel and a rat rod-correct shifter. Not quite the body kit and chrome wheels image Scion is going for these days, but a very nice one-off creation.

Yea it’s different, but who cares? and scions are exactly what youth want…not me, but many young people. I have a friend with a 5.0 stang that ran 10’s and did wheel stands, but would rather drive his tC, and spend money on it.

Scion is defiantly having a hard time breaking back into the youth market.

Suffice it to say that despite the best efforts of authorities on both sides of the border the flow of B.C. bud remains unfettered.

Considering all the youth sees are older bargain shopping adults driving scions.

FACT…
Auto makers will pay big bucks to have some one put paint, stickers, and nice looking wheels on a car, how mush did Toyota spent to get most of there line up to look pretty?…

How about pending money on cars that we care about? If Nissan is doing why not you….
It’s been sead one to many time’s but I’ll say it again, you can put lipstick on a pig, guess what it’s still a pig…

Why are the teeth chewing on the tires? Shouldn’t those A-10 style teeth be at the front of the car? That just looks ridiculous.

Can I be the only person who thinks this car is just plain awesome? Period correct interior works, rivets, custom fab, style, taste, the list goes on…

BTW Leftlane hurry up and post the HKS Genesis that was at SEMA because you posted an article about it back when it was an illustration so it is time to show the real deal.

Anyone else see the irony in dressing up a japanese car to look like an american fighter/bomber that blasted the sh*t out of japan in World War II?

I do, Mark. But I was thinking modern Thunderbolt over the Mustang, Lightning, Corsair or Flying Fortress. It’s the shape of the jaws. However, the rivets and seats give it that WWII feel.

But this would be like dressing a Zero up to look like a Mustang. It doesn’t really work.

It is pretty funny, though.

But, um, what’s with the really weird shifter? Is the driver standing up while driving or something? It looks like a cut off barbell bar or something.

That looks like the actual Scion comes with a pack of stickers you can put on it. À la skateboards.

that is about as close to the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen as any car has gotten! absolute waste of car and materials!

Yeah, P40 is much more like it. But it just seems that those jaws should be at the front of the car, and a big 7 barrel 30mm gatling gun should be sticking out of the mouth. Maybe two guns.

But instead of this look, they should have kept the rivets and put a big red circle on each side. That would have been more appropriate.

You know, a Spy Hunter version of the tC might look pretty neat.

I’m here at SEMA now. Saw it today. There are a dozen more custom Scions in that booth and most look better than this one. Dunno why they feature this one?
