Electric Audi R8 to debut at Frankfurt show?

09/04/2009, 9:37 AM

By Drew Johnson

Audi denied an electric version of the R8 supercar was in the works earlier this year, but a teaser image on the automaker’s Web site seems to indicate otherwise. An image of what appears to be an electric version of the R8 appeared on the company’s ‘Electricity Untamed’ micro site.

Audi has been hinting at an upcoming electric vehicle with its Electricity Untamed Web site, and it appears as though an electric R8 could just be that vehicle. The car depicted in the teaser is unquestionably a version of the R8, with a blocked off grille suggesting an electric powertrain. Rumors of an electric R8 first surfaced in May.

Given that Mercedes-Benz has already announced an all-electric version of its forthcoming SLS supercar, it would seem logical that Audi would want to field a high-dollar EV of its own. An electric R8 – believed to be called the R8 ePerformance – could also fill the void of the DOA R8 TDI.

Audi is still keeping tight-lipped on the subject, but look for the Audi R8 ePerformance to possibly make an appearance at this month’s Frankfurt Motor Show.

How that coincide with Audi fuhrer claiming that Volt is for idiots? His electric slide is meant for even bigger idiots?

haha what a hypocrite. The volt is a car for idiots because it carries a 40k price tag, but an electric powered R8 that will probably cost 200k is for intellectuals? What a retard.

He may have said that it is a car for idiots, but he never said that idiots don’t exist. May as well get a piece of the action.

Stupid Audi and their plans for electric R8s, I wonder how that’s going to fly. To power a car like the R8 for a distance of over 80 miles, it’ll take a lot of batteries and will make the car even heavier.

They had the solution in their hands, with the R8 TDI, that was going to be by far the greatest R8 to be offered, but noooo, that’s too much effort and costs too much to adapt the Le Mans’ diesel engine for the road.

I’m very displeased with this choice, but then again, since I don’t have the money for either the TDI or the Electric, or any R8 for that matter, it doesn’t bear much relevance :(

the guy is rite, no need to apologize. u should rather give ur money to unicef than buying a volt.
as much as i love the R8, cars need a decent sound and this one makes no exception.

This is a unique way of showing a teaser! From what I can tell, it doesn’t look like the lamps sit flush with the body. In fact they look like they protrude outward. I hope it will look deliberate, as opposed to the lamps on cars (eg Toyota) that have been enlarged due to heating issues with the lamps.

i think there is a market for this type of car. Remember, de nysschen said the volt would fail because it was too EXPENSIVE for a car company that makes CHEAP cars.
