Europe-only Audi A4 2.0 TDI e achieves 51 mpg

04/25/2009, 4:43 PM

By Nick Aziz

To coincide with the upcoming sales launch of its new A4 2.0 TDI e, Audi has released fuel efficiency numbers for the new midsize sedan. The has received a fuel economy rating of 51 miles per U.S. gallon. But if it’s U.S. availability you’re hoping for, don’t hold your breath. Audi has no plans to offer the TDI e model stateside.

This ‘e’ model develops an output of 136 horsepower and can reach 62 mph in in 9.5 seconds. It tops out at 134 mph and will sell for 30,800 euros. According to Audi, it’s the most fuel efficient standard-size sedan in the world.

The TDI e features a 6-speed manual transmission with a final-drive ratio five percent higher than the regular A4, enabling a reduction in engine speed in each of the six gears. The engine-management system has also been modified for maximum efficiency, Audi says. Fuel-saving low-rolling-resistance tires also improve overall mileage.

Standard equipment also includes a braking energy recovery system. Aided by intelligent alternator regulation, this system converts surplus kinetic energy to electrical energy during a vehicle’s braking phases. This electrical energy is temporarily stored in the electrical system’s battery. When the vehicle resumes acceleration, the battery supplies this stored energy to the vehicle’s network — reducing the load on the alternator and thus saving fuel.

An on-board computer with efficiency program is also part of the standard-equipment package. The on-board computer displays all fuel-efficiency data on the center screen. A series of recommendations enable drivers to conserve fuel to the tune of 30 percent — simply by modifying their particular driving habits.

Everybody knows VW lies about their diesel MPG figures. I also love how they plaster North American billboards with Q5 ads, that claims that it’s a fuel sipper… when that 2.0T is a pig, and gets 0wned by the Toyota Rav4 V6, in fuel consumption **AND** power.

I had an A4 19.TDI (year 2001) and was able to get up to 60mpg out of it over a tankful regularly when I spent most of the time on german and italian country roads. My average mileage was about 50mpg (4.7liters per 100km). When I’d gun it long haul on the autobahn it would drop to about 38mpg doing over 120mph for much of that drive. None of those figures are bad.

I think the horsepower was 120 or 125, but the torque was great. Getting good mileage while enjoying the drive is easy if you know what you are doing and understand your vehicle well. I wanted to import that car to the states but Audi USA refused to support the mechanicals, and VW only offered the crappy version of that motor.

I would like to see Audi bring soon TDI to most of their line up.
I think they will get great sales and a lot of people jumping into the diesel bandwagon.

I would love to have a Q5 TDI.

idrinorbarsaku, you, my friend, have a reading impediment. I think LS7 just said that the Rav4 (a Toyota, the last time I checked) “owns” the A4. Feel free to put your ass back on, jackass. LOLOLOLOLOLOL&@^*&!^*&!!!!!

Nope…I’d rather have that Bimmer 335d…or a Pontiac…=/

and you got that from what?? he hates audi and would come up with anything to make them seem bad(nmofgm), How can “you” assume he was talking about the 4 when he was just mentioning the q5? There are so many cars from audi and vw that offer “that 2.0t”, which IS better at gas mileage than the toyota’s v6 because we had an avalon with the same exact engine in the rav4…it rarely got above 22mpg combined. Usually, it stayed at 18-22. Going to canada with the avalon, averaged 27mpg at 70mph. My passat is always at around 26-31mpgs combined. Driving to the same place in canada, at 70mph cruise(same as avalon), it averages 32-33mpg, that is 4mpg above the window sticker! It’s easy to talk out of your ass like LS7, it’s even easier to talk about it when you have actually owned the cars you are talking about!

Just take a look at the headline: A4, 2.0, TDI e, 51 mpg. It’s no wonder they’re hesitant to bring this stuff over here. Vanna could uncover all the vowels and consonants and we’d still never solve the puzzle.

Hey, I just got back from a party with the Blues, and saw them all just wasted. Trying to pick a fight with Brad Boyes wasn’t one of my finest moments, but we made up at the end. Damn you Canucks!

Jake, that’s awesome- you show wisdom beyond your years! Knowing when not to drop the gloves is probably more important than knowing when it is time. If the Blues remain largely intact over the off season then I’m damn glad we got them in the first round this year. Someone else on the site summed it up by saying they’re young, dumb and full of…, well you know. Next year they’ll be a little older, a little smarter and probably a little less spent by the time the playoffs arrive. It should be fun to watch.

idrinorbarsaku, NMOFGM wouldn’t say anything good about Toyota. Right?

NMOFGM would compare this to the Aveo or Equinox and say something about a revolution … which is a vague reference to revolving bankruptcy.

I thought that NMOGM is one of “editors” of this blog who generates a bit more traffic, when traffic is light. Advertisement is calculated on based traffic. I can’t believe that someone is really that dumb. Perhaps I am optimist and have a higher expectations of society.

Just to clear some things up, Europe measures the gallon differently than we do here in the Unites States. 1 gallon [US, liquid] = 0.832 674 184 63 gallon [UK]. This is why the European measured mpg ratings are so much higher over there than they are here.

Liveyjay, whoever provides mileage is actually translating from Imperial to US gallon. Europe is using liters for the past 20 years (even UK). In European measuring (Imperial gallon) same car does over 60 mpg.
