Moving out of the world of designing automobiles is no new task, especially for someone as noted – and as controversial – as ex- BMW design head Chris Bangle.
According to a Korean newspaper, Bangle has been tapped by Samsung to pen its future mobile phones and notebook computers. Over the last few years, more and more electronics firms have branched out to famed designers to breathe new life into formerly pedestrian devices; Pininfarina, in particular, has lent its expertise to a wide range of products.
Like BMW prior to Bangle’s arrival, Samsung is noted for its conservative designs. The Korean brand has been shaken up by rivals, especially Apple, which offer more upmarket materials and a more audacious design language.
Joongang hasn’t specified when Bangle might start his new job with Samsung.
Bangle is best known for introducing a new design language to the traditionally staid BMW. Although criticized by many, Bangle’s designs reshaped the automaker’s image. The American designer left BMW in April of 2009 to start his own independent design firm, Chris Bangle and Associates, in Turin, Italy. At BMW, he was replaced by Adrian van Hooydonk, who continues to oversee design for all of the automaker’s brands.
Look for more details to develop soon.
