The price of cool? $1.375 million.

That’s what it took for one lucky bidder to take home legendary actor and personality Steve McQueen’s 1970 Porsche 911S. Immortalized in the film Le Mans, the 911S quickly became one of McQueen’s favorite and best-known cars. You can find more details – and a video – here.

The staggering sum, among the highest ever paid for a car from Zuffenhausen, was realized October 19 at RM Auctions’ event in Monterey, California.

If the buyer was willing to forgo the McQueen pedigree, he probably could have found a similarly restored 1970 911S for somewhere around $55,000. The price of cool has been officially established.
