Canadian auto journalist Jack Kazmierski has written an interesting print-only column on fake performance upgrades. Usually, car upgrades are either aesthetic (like rims) or functional (like tires). However, some car owners like to create the appearance of performance upgrades, when in reality they are only aesthetic. Kazmierski shares a few such stories. The first story involves a Mercedes “S500″ he spotted in the parking lot at a social event. He knew something looked unusual about it, but he wasn’t sure what. When he finally spoke to the owner, it turned out it was actually an S320 with a new badge. “It’s the easiest and least expensive way to upgrade your car,” the owner was told by a Mercedes parts dealer. Another humorous story involves a Honda Civic with an air scoop on the roof — something that would only make sense on a mid- or rear-engined car! Lastly, Kazmierski points to a “ Porsche killer” Hyundai Accent with six-speed transmission. The only problem? It didn’t really have a six-speed box or any engine upgrades. Rather, the owner got a six-speed shift knob, and body kit, and a paint job. (Unpimp your auto, anyone?)
