The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched a new safety probe that could cover as many as 830,000 Toyota Camry sedan and RAV4 crossover models.

Just as Toyota looked to be clear of its recent recall woes, the NHTSA has opened an investigation into Camry and RAV4 models from the 2007 model year due to a potential fire risk. Although the probe is currently labeled a preliminary investigation, it could lead to a recall.

The NHTSA launched the safety investigation earlier this week after receiving six complaints of driver's side door fires. Although the investigation is still in its early stages, the NHTSA says it "appears the fires are originating from the power window master switch located on the driver's side door."

Toyota told Reuters in a statement that it is aware of the investigation and plans to fully cooperate with the NHTSA.

If the probe ultimately leads to a recall, it would be Toyota's largest since its rash of unintended acceleration recalls that began in 2009. In total those recalls included more than 10 million vehicles worldwide.
