Ferrari CEO Luca Cordero di Montezemolo told Italy’s Quattroruote magazine that there are absolutely no plans for a new entry-level Ferrari model. Currently, the company’s least expensive model is the $175,000 Ferrari F430. And according to Montezemolo, it’s going to stay that way. He said not inflating production is important to maintaining the exclusivity of a Ferrari. Amedo Felisa, the company’s Deputy Managing Director, made similar comments in Februrary, but shortly thereafter, rumors resurfaced. While we won’t see a cheaper Ferrari in the foreseeable future, another recent rumor could still come to fruition. Earlier this month, the Il Sole 24 Ore financial newspaper said Ferrari might be working on a new 2+2 similar to the 612 Scaglietti, but smaller and with a V8 engine. If these rumors are accurate, we suspect it would be priced around or slightly above the F430 and probably use the same engine.

A cheaper version of the 2+2 612 Scaglietti already exists. It’s called a Maserati Quattroporte and guess what? It has a version of Ferrari’s V8 in it. I doubt Ferrari will put a new body on the Quattroporte and then charge more for it.

I’d like to see them move away from the heavy grand tourers and build another car like the 1984-85 288GTO. The current V8s look like cartoons. They don’t have the sex appeal like the cars from the ’60s-’80s. I can see why people would cry for the sexy Dino (although that had a V6). Their parent company, FIAT, ought to do another funky project car like they did with the Lancia Stratos by sticking a Ferrari engine into another (cheaper) marque.
