Ferrari makes carbon ceramic brakes standard on all 2008 models

12/05/2007, 4:17 PM

By Drew Johnson

Ferrari has announced that carbon ceramic brakes will be a standard feature across its entire 2008 model lineup. The announcement was made today by Ferrari General Manager Amedeo Felisa at the Bologna Motor Show.

While ceramic brakes have been optional on some of the best sports in the world for several years — such as on vehicles offered by Porsche, Lamborghini and Ferrari — Ferrari’s announcement marks the first time an automaker has made them standard across its entire range.

Ceramic brakes disperse heat better than their standard counterparts and all but eliminate brake fade. Normally the performance brake option costs at least $10,000.

I wangled a ride in an ‘08 SLR Roadster last week.
Sweet, but I’d still take this.

Must have something to do with Kimi’s world championship. Ferrari’s way of giving back…

Ever since driving an SLR at Pocono Raceway, I’ve found that stopping power is just as thrilling as acceleration… mmmmmmm ceramic brakes [\drool]

…nevermind the $30k price tag to replace ‘em, though; SLR front rotors are $12k/each and $3500 for a set of pads. I’m sure Ferrari’s will be superior and cheaper.

NO!! Bad Ferrari!! Think of all the lost revenue you could have made by keeping it as an option.
Still, sacrifice a $10,000 option to lure another buyer…could work.

j-dude: I was in the passenger seat, so it was mostly gawking. But yeah, it was a great experience.

I guess they think of making extra revenue from the replacement pads…

Well that’s very nice of Ferrari, I wonder if it’s going to jack up the price of a Ferrari by 10k now. Ceramic brakes are nice. They offer superior stopping power, no brake fade, and they look really cool when they are hot, gotta love that glow. But yeah if you want to spend about two cobalts in replacing your ceramic disks then I guess having it on a Ferrari is for you. But I guess if you have the money to afford a Ferrari then 10k-20k in replacing your discs won’t be a problem.

SS4LIFE, I guess if the prices are at 400K that they’re asking for on the street, yea 10K for discbrakes would make sense.

That’s true. In the grand scheme of things when it comes to Ferrari’s prices, $10k brakes are rather proportionate.

Yeah considering the cost of these things now I’m wondering if the Corvette engineering team made the right decision in making ceramic disk brakes standard on the new ZR-1. But hey if they want to compete and perform with the likes of Ferraris…. When in Rome…

Next week they will announce 2008 price increases too.
Are they going to deplete the supply of carbon-ceramic trees.

I think the supply of carbon-ceramic trees are already dwindling, $10k for the option I think is low. Don’t the ceramics on the 599 cost over $18k? and the Lambo option I think is similar. Maybe you can get carbon ceramics on a 911 for around $10k, but that might be it.

The others are right, josh, no loss of profit here, Ferrari will just be upping the sticker prices (which don’t mean much anyway) to compensate. More power to them.

Next on Ferrari’s list of options-to-make-standard is the F1 transmission. Something like 9 out of 10 Ferraris already have the F1 transmission. I’m sure there are some Ferraristi who love shifting for themselves, but Ferrari invests so heavily into and they’re so proud of the transmission (and rightfully so), that pretty soon, a Ferrari won’t be seen as a real Ferrari unless it has one.

hey jjt, you didn’t happen to look under the car did you? Pretty much all of it is completely covered by a black light weight composite cover to improve the aerodynamics. It kinda reminded me of like a hot wheels car or something.
