Ferrari F430 Scuderia Spider leaked in official video?

09/22/2008, 4:24 PM

By Drew Johnson

Thanks to a simple equation of more power and less weight, the Ferrari F430 Scuderia is one of the most amazing performance cars to ever be built. By deleting 220 pounds and adding 27 horsepower, the F430 Scuderia was even able to beat the mighty Enzo around Ferrari’s test track. So with perfection seemingly hit square on the head, would Ferrari dare alter the Scuderia?

Thanks to a background image revealed during the video unveiling of the new Ferrari California, we have our first evidence that the a second version of the Scuderia is indeed in the works — an F430 Scuderia Spider. The F430 Scuderia Spider is said to be readying for its debut by the end of 2008, with production earmarked for about 300 units.

Despite the F430 Scuderia’s heavy emphasis on light weight, it appears as though Ferrari can wring out enough performance from the heavier convertible to still qualify it for the Scuderia nameplate. Convertibles are historically heavier than their fixed-roof counterparts – due to the need of added reinforcements – and the F430 Spider actually tips the scales about 155 pounds heavier than the F430 coupe. Therefore, look for the Scuderia Spider to weigh in at least that much heavier than the coupe version, with acceleration figures down between .1 and .2 seconds from its fixed-roof counterpart. But with 510 horsepower and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission aboard, the Scuderia Spider will be far from slow.

It’s not exactly clear if Ferrari intentionally placed the picture of the Scuderia Spider in the background of the video or if it was simply a mix-up. However, the latter seems like stronger case as Ferrari is historically known for keeping upcoming models under strict lock and key.

The rumor mill has the F430 Scuderia Spider pegged for a November 5th reveal at the Ferrari Challenge at Mugello, so keep your eyes glued to this space for further updates.

hm. i dont really get it. i dont think its gunna be as good as the coupe. im actually sure of it. i dont really like convertibles. they should make it a t-top. i still dont see why you would take something as amazing as the scuderia and try and do something more with it that is just gunna decrease performance.
